Let someone else drive! Satechi Headrest Review

(Before It's News)

Tablet sales are big.  In fact, sales are forecasted to see a 98% increase over 2011, bringing an estimated 119 Million new devices into the market.  When you get those devices, whether they’re an iPad, Xoom, Surface, Galaxy Tab or other tablet, chances are you’ll want to watch a movie on it.  Further still, you may have a need for watching a video in the car.  If that is you, or perhaps you have children, allow me to introduce you to the Satechi Headrest Mount for 7″ – 10″ tablets.

I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this thing for a couple weeks now – I will cut to the chase and say this thing ROCKS!

As you can see in the picture above, the Satechi mount is a nice, low-profile piece of hardware.  One thing I loved is that it doesn’t impede on the passenger in the backseat.   Satechi brought this to market with the ability to manipulate the orientation to both portrait and landscape settings with full 360 degree rotation.  Portrait landscape comes into play especially for those distant family members who still film video from their phones in portrait mode versus landscape mode.  (I know I’m not the only one with family like that!)

Installation of the mount itself is quite simple – it has cushioning pads built in, to avoid rattling, and a clamp that tightens nicely to the headrest brackets.   Here is a video that shows the installation as well as how to orient your tablet in different directions.

In the video above they show two different types of tablets – I own an iPad personally, the Retina one at that, so I was admittedly reluctant to drive with it the first few days.  Upon installation in my car, I was doing my best to manhandle the mount to assure myself it wouldn’t somehow malfunction and drop my iPad.   Much to my satisfaction, Satechi’s craftsmanship is great as their mount held firmly onto my iPad.

Once I was ready to drive, I tried putting the mount through the full gambit.  I sped, broke hard, took tight turns, drove over bumps and, in each challenge, was met with the same result: the Satechi Headrest Mount just works.  No two ways about it.

If you or a loved one, or friend, have a tablet and travel via cars I’d highly recommend this mount.   I have a four-year old son who enjoys watching movies during road trips.  One day, during my review period, my wife offered to take him to school in her car (without the mount) and he insisted that she take my car, so he could watch a movie!

See, it wasn’t that he wanted to “watch a movie” — no, he hadn’t wanted to watch a movie on his way to school in months.  Perhaps he didn’t because he was uncomfortable.

Have you ever SEEN a child watching a movie on a tablet?  Chances are their head is tilted over and they adjust themselves repeatedly in an attempt to get comfortable.  With the use of a headrest mount, like Satechi’s, children and passengers can comfortably enjoy a movie with their neck in a natural position. This is an added benefit that isn’t marketed – no parent wants their child to be uncomfortable and I was ecstatic that my son felt better!

Satechi also makes a Bluetooth headset that I’ll be reviewing soon – stay tuned for that post.

Pro’s:

  • At $39.99, the Satechi mount is very reasonably priced
  • Easy installation and removal
  • Customizable orientation for different devices or viewing options
  • Low-profile keeps passengers comfortable

Con:

  • Mount tends to squeak without the tablet installed while driving. (See easy removal above)

With the holiday shopping season approaching, you should consider this as a gift for that techie in your life.  Satechi makes a quality product and I’m excited to hear about your opinions of this mount.  It worked great for me and I feel confident you’ll love it too!

Thank you to Max Borges and Satechi for the review unit!
