Let someone else drive this time! Review: Satechi Headrest Mount

(Before It's News)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last few years, Tablet sales have been growing tremendously.  In fact, tablet sales are expected to double in 2012 to around 118.9 Million units this year.  Well, people also have families, friends and tend to drive cars – which is where  the fine folks at Satechi come in.  Aside from the fact that they’re a company founded here in the U.S.A., Satechi also makes some mighty fine products to accompany your phones, tablets, computers and other electronics devices you use.

For the last few days, I’ve had the pleasure of using their Headrest Mount for 7″ – 10″ tablets.  Unlike many reviews, I’ll let the cat out of the bag here: THIS THING ROCKS!

The mount itself is amazingly simple to install, has plenty of orientation options and really does the job well.  That whole “doing the job well” part is admittedly going to be a point of concern for many of you, as it was for me.  See, I have the new iPad and am perpetually squeamish about it being dropped, scratched or otherwise malformed.  No one wants to spend $700+ on a device and have it dropped / broken.  When I installed the Satechi Headrest Mount in my car, I was intent on making sure the iPad would be held firmly in place.

Let’s be honest – I was so nervous, I was manhandling that thing to ensure it wouldn’t fall out.  Lo and behold, it stayed put…as expected.  I took this thing for a few drives, in an attempt to put it through the wringer.  Taking sharp turns, driving over bumps…anything I could think of to test how tight the grip was and time and again, it performed well!

Even though the mount provides vertical height adjustments and various orientation options, it’s pretty slim in terms of not being obtrusive to riders in the back seat.

Another ringing endorsement of this thing was a family story – the other day, my wife was leaving to go to work and said she’d take the car with the mount installed in it…to which my son replied “No!  I want to watch a movie!”

See, kids who are fortunate to enjoy an iPad often find themselves hunched over, straining their neck as they look downwards to watch a movie — with the Satechi Headrest Mount, they’re able to maintain good posture and enjoy the experience that much more.

Here’s a simple video by Satechi showing various orientations as well as how to install / remove the Headrest Mount.

Pros:

  • Easy to install
  • Inexpensive – SRP at $39.99
  • Easy to remove
  • Unobtrusive to backseat passengers
Cons:
  • An empty mount, in my case anyway, tended to squeak during drives / bumps.  Easy Fix: See “Pro # 3″

All in all, this thing is pretty awesome.  It’ll be great for roadtrips, getting stuck in traffic or regular driving around town.  While I didn’t have the oppotunity to test the Bluetooth Remote, I’m sure that it would only have made my experience that much better.  Whether you’re in the market yourself or have a friend / family member with a tablet, be sure to check out Satechi’s website and pickup one of these mounts!

Thanks to Max Borges & Satechi for the review unit!
