(Before It's News)

Smartphones seem to be attracting all the attention as far as consumer electronics goods are concerned. Nearly every major player in the semiconductor industry is related to the smartphone industry, be it hardware, assembly or software. There have been trends that lasted long in this market segment and there have been some which died like a shooting star. Apple released its iPhone and everybody was crazy about it, then Samsung came out with its Galaxy range of Android based smartphones which created a big wave and recently bumped the Iphone off the charts to claim the number one position in US markets. Nokia once used to be a front runner but its windows based devices didn’t last long in Indian markets.

Cell phone displays have been constantly increasing in size and Data from the mobile Indian confers with the hypothesis. Data shows that Indian customers seem to have an affinity for a bigger screen size. In Jan this year, 2.9 inch was the average screen size searched by consumers as compared to 3.6 inch searched in Aug. The reports include online preferences of over one million people who visited the website in August.

The fact sets headlock as Apple is finally planning to come out with a bigger screen size after keeping the screen size constantly 3.5 inches of its flagship iPhone devices. One reason for Samsung beating Apple was its bigger display size. Android phones especially have been expanding. 4.3, 4.5, 4.7, 5.0 inches, all have hit the market, and not just NOkia or Samsung, every other maker seems to be making the displays bigger (which necessarily isn’t better, i mean, what are tablets for then?).

The enlargement might also be the reason for reduced 3G data prices and upcoming online streaming services like BoxTV and iStream. Whatever may be the reason, increasing screen sizes for sure hamper the purpose of mobile phones to some extent, which is extreme portability.
