T-Mobile USA, the U.S. unit of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom named industry veteran John Legere as its new Chief Executive Officer on Wednesday.
Legere, 54, has over 32 years of experience in the mobile and telecom industry, having served as chief executive of Asia Global Crossing in a variety of senior executive positions with AT&T and Dell.
“John is a talented and proven executive who brings a successful track record of leading and operating consumer- and business-focused telecommunications and technology companies,” said Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom.
“As T-Mobile moves forward with its strategic initiatives to improve its market position… John has obviously the right skill set to lead the business into the future.”
“John’s experience in the telecommunication and technology industries at Global Crossing and Dell will enhance T-Mobile’s ability to deliver superior mobile experiences for our customers as the Company continues to strengthen its business,” Obermann said.
Legere succeeds Jim Alling, who has served as interim CEO since June. Alling will now return to his position as T-Mobile’s Chief Operating Officer, the company said.
T-Mobile’s former CEO, Philipp Humm, resigned in June, six months after a proposed merger of T-Mobile with AT&T fell apart when federal regulators moved to block the deal as anti-competitive.
T-Mobile formally introduced Legere to employees Wednesday morning in a video meet and greet, which was posted later in the day on YouTube.
