(Before It's News)

Netflix has lost rights to hundreds of hours of A&E and History Channel programming because talks failure between the streaming service and content producers. Netflix will not be able to play over 800 hours of video content from these sources. The changes take effect immediately on Netflix Watch Instantly.

Netflix loses exclusive rights

Netflix and content producers were in talks last week over the terms of distribution. Netflix was hoping to get exclusive rights; that was the bone of contention. When things didn’t pan out as the company had planned, both parties decided not to renew their contract which expired past week on Friday.

The termination of contract means Netflix subscribers will miss several programmes. However, experts predict this to be only a temporary problem and the programmes are likely to return in near future. The non-renewal of current contract affects the History Channel programming the most. The company still has rights to around 300 hours of A&E programming.

Though still a major player in the industry, Netflix’s position has been threatened by Amazon in the past few months. Amazon has its own streaming service, Prime Instant Video Service. Though subscription to Amazon’s service costs a little more than Netflix’s, the former makes up for it by allowing subscribers access free Kindle books and other offers like free shipping for a few days. Until recently, Netflix’s strongest advantage lied its exclusive rights to stream content. Now a major concern is that without those rights, it is going to be an uphill task to convince the consumer to come to pay for their streaming when they can watch the same programmes at other places online.
