NASA’s Mars spacecraft Curiosity has sent new images to its home planet. The new images show some familiar names including that of the current United States president Barak Obama and several other big names in politics and NASA administration figures.
Captured by the rover’s very powerful camera, MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager), one of the images shows an 10×8.2cm aluminium plaque bearing this message and these names:
Dust, pebbles and variously-sized bits of Mars can be seen scattered around the plaque and deck, leftover detritus from the rover’s landing.
The complete list of signatures is:
Barack Obama, President, United States of America
Joe Biden, Vice President
John P. Holdren, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy
Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Edward J. Weiler, Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate (2008–2011)
James Green, Director, Planetary Sciences Division
Doug McCuistion, Director, Mars Exploration Program
Michael Meyer, Program Scientist, Mars Exploration Program
David Lavery, Program Executive, Mars Science Laboratory
In another image, there are four medallions bearing four different logos of (1) the JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), (2) NASA, (3) the Curiosity mission logo and, a reminder of national chauvinism, (4) the American flag.
MAHLI has been developed by the Malin Space Science Systems division of NASA. It has been designed to explore and send very high resolution images of Mars’ surface inside the Gale Crater field. As the recent images show, MAHLI is not only good at taking quality images of Mars, but also of itself.
