The Aakash tablet has been in the news for the past one year for glorious as well inglorious reasons. First, Aakash II got delayed because of differences between IIT – R and Datawind. Then it was announced that Aakash II will launch in April 2012 with no price hike, but then that got delayed too. Over the past months there has been consistent talk about how the tablet will feature upgraded features and come out with Android’s ICS on board. While there has been a lot of talk about Aakash II, competitors, be it Magic Pencil, Kloudpad or Classpad, have not only spoken but launched and captured a fair share of the tablet market.
However, as the age-old adage goes better late than never.
Aakash II is all set to be officially launched on November 11 (Education Day) by President Pranab Mukherjee. Just before the launch, the tablet was given to Union Ministers to get their opinions on the same. The Ministers who did use the device have given it a positive rating. Defence Minister A K Antony said, “This (the device) can be a game changer for students in education.” The Labour Ministry has proposed to make these devices available for ITI students too.
This educational device, which is touted to be made available to ALL students in the next five-seven years, is a step forward in providing cheap yet high-quality modern technological devices to students. Given the rise in apps, mobile internet and online universities, it would be correct to say that the face of education is changing. Aakash II looks to make this change available to students across the economic and social spectrum that is prevalent in India.
While the long-delayed launch is more than welcome, what remains to be seen is how the device will function and if it will be able to stand its own in the face of stiff competiton.
