(Before It's News)

I won’t go into too much detail on this as Apple announcements are pretty hard to miss, but Apple last night announced an iPad mini, a fourth generation iPad, a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and an incredibly thin new iMac.

The iPad mini is Apple’s answer to the Nexus 7 and the wave of entry-level Android tablets that will start popping up in the coming month. However, while the iPad mini competes in terms of hardware specs, the price point isn’t as low as people had hoped for prior to launch. The cheapest model, 16GB Wi-Fi only, is priced at £269. The most expensive is the 64GB 3G model, which comes in at £529.

With Google expected to announce a 32GB Nexus 7 at a price point of roughly £200, there is some price difference between that and the 32GB Wi-Fi iPad mini, which will retail at £349 inc. VAT. If you’re willing to forgo the 16GB storage difference between the two basic models, the iPad mini is around £60-£70 dearer. This may be justified however by the superior range of apps and games (especially those that are tablet optimised) that are available for iOS.

Slightly more surprisingly, Apple also announced a new iteration of its iPad. Specs wise there are not huge differences between the 3rd and 4th gen iPads, but it does include an LTE chip for those early adopters that are interested.

Also introduced yesterday evening was a new version of the iMac, which has a stunning design. As an iMac user I do like the look of it, although for me the thickness of a desktop isn’t a huge consideration given that it spends all its time sat on my desk. Still, it does look great.

A 13-inch version of the Mac Book pro with Retina display was also announced by Apple for those users that want its hi-res display in the most portable form possible.

Pre-orders for the various new products begin over the next couple of weeks and begin shipping in November.
