Apple on Tuesday released press invites for their newest event to be held next Tuesday, October 23rd.
The next day, Google, their largest and most hotly contested rival, sent out its own invites to an event to be held a few days later on October 29th. With invites from both companies issued to the press, the speculation games have begun, and just in time for the holiday shopping season. Apple is expected to announce the long-rumored iPad Mini, a 7.85-inch version of their best-selling and market topping tablet computer, as well as a few other devices thrown in for fun.
Likewise, Google has been rumored to be releasing an update to their existing Nexus tablet, a 7-inch device announced and released this past summer.
There are many who believe Google will replace their existing 16GB model with a larger, 32GB tablet, priced at only $249. Should this be the case, Googlers could have the choice between an 8GB Nexus 7 for $199 or a 32GB for $249, both prices much lower than Apple’s current iPad and even lower than their latest iPod Touch players.
It’s unlikely Google would host an entire event around an existing device with a slight bump in capacity, however, causing some to wonder if Google will announce the next generation Nexus smartphone, a device which CNET is calling the “Worst-kept secret in the technology world.”
Google has been using the Nexus line as a platform for the truest and purest form of their Android operating system. These phones have only Google to answer to and have no extra skins or UI wrappers involved that other phone manufacturers (such as HTC, Motorola or Samsung) might place on their Android phones. The Nexus line is also the first in line to receive software updates from Google. The Nexus 4 is said to be left in the hands of LG for production and ships with a quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera.
True to Google form, the press invites feature a very bright and colorful cityscape, filled with the blues, greens, reds and yellows familiar to Google fans everywhere. The words “The playground is open” are set next to the Google speak-to-text microphone icon found in any Android search field. The event will be held in New York on the 29th at 10:00 a.m.
Members of the tech press will be quite busy as the month of October winds down, as Microsoft will be hosting a Windows Phone 8 event on the same day in sunny San Francisco. Microsoft is expected to announce some “exciting Windows Phone 8 news,” which may or may not include Nokia’s 920 and 820 handsets that were announced a week before Apple’s iPhone 5.
A few days later, Microsoft will be holding yet another event on October 25th, one day before Windows 8 ships, to “celebrate Windows 8,” complete with a reception for the new Microsoft Surface.
Earlier this week, Microsoft finally announced the pricing and availability for the tablet they unveiled more than 3 months ago. Starting at $499, the Surface will ship in 32GB and 64GB configurations. Microsoft began taking orders for their new tablet on Tuesday and will begin selling them in retail stores on October 25th.
