MasterCard and NTT DoCoMo are partnering to enable the company’s smartphones to make mobile credit payments outside of Japan, anywhere MasterCard PayPass is accepted.
“NTT DoCoMo has a strong market position in Japan as well as one of the most widely and successfully deployed mobile wallet solutions globally,” Beth Roberts, director of payments for Javelin Strategy & Research, Pleasanton, Calif., told Mobile Marketing & Technology.
MasterCard officials were not available for immediate commentary beyond what was in the press release.
“The partnership with MasterCard is significant because it furthers the network’s strategy of working with large MNOs to extend mobile solutions through the existing MasterCard acceptance network. By linking multiple countries in support of MasterCard PayPass and NTT DoCoMo, the organizations will also lend further credence to the development of NFC-enabled handsets.”
However, Atlanta Ga.-based telecom analyst Jeff Kagan isn’t so sure that the announcement will do much to move the needle in terms of the evolution of mobile payments.
Kagan points out that several other telecom providers and payments providers have made announcements about partnerships over the last few years, but none has been big enough in and of itself to advance mobile payments to the next level in the way that Apple’s launch of the iPhone move smartphone apps into the next level.
However, Kagan added that the more of these types of collaborations come into being, the closer mobile payments will move from a novelty to the mainstream.
