(Before It's News)

The battery that could operate on anything – whether it’s mice or hybrid cars, is known as the nickel-metal hydride or NiMH battery. It was invented by an Akron, Ohio local named Stanford Ovshinsky.

Stanford Ovshinsky

The lack of a college education did not stop this self-taught inventor to successfully come up with patents for which he received several honorary degrees. Though his name may not ring a bell to many, he is the man behind flat panel displays, solar cells, and phase change memory. The brand Ovonics was even named after this technological and electronic genius.

The aforementioned items are only some of the many contributions made by Ovshinsky. He most likely had something to do with most of the modern gadgets that mankind is enjoying today.

Ovshinsky recently passed away due to cancer complications.
