Hi folks. Welcome to “Accessibility Minute”, your weekly look at Assisitive Technology—those clever tools and devices designed to help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing or other special needs.
Most people are aware that white canes are used by people who are blind or visually impaired. However, not everyone knows that these canes serve multiple purposes. In addition to helping a person who is blind to navigate obstacles and find a clear path as they walk, they have a number of other purposes including detecting curbs, navigating stairs, or predicting holes or drop offs.
The white cane also serves to alert sighted individuals that the user is someone who is blind or visually impaired and is someone who is maximizing their independence in travel.
