(Before It's News)

It is used in headphones, gamepads and the iPod accessory mophie pulse. It’s name: ViviTouch. A kind of artificial muscle that really makes video games and sounds alive. The technology behind it: electroactive polymers. Developed by the Bayer subsidiary Artificial Muscle.

Recreating genuine touch has required genuine commitment. Since pioneering Electroactive Polymer technology, Artificial Muscle worked to make it lighter, smaller, quieter—the most responsive, energy-efficient haptics component in the world.

Artificial Muscle, Inc. of Sunnyvale, California, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer MaterialScience LLC, is the world’s leading supplier and developer of electroactive polymer products (EAP).

Today, ViviTouch™ is the leading technology developer, designer and manufacturer of “haptic” EAP technology diagrammed above. From the wide spectrum¨ of sensory vibrations ViviTouch™ is capable of outputting to its real-time, precise controllability and energy-efficiency, our team is wholly committed to providing partners with flexible and customizable design options, ensuring end-users the widest range of customizability imaginable.

In the end, we are as proud of our technology’s accuracy as we are its versatility. Only by integrating into virtually any end-product where sensory feedback is required can we serve our mission of bringing “real feel” back into the technological devices that touch people’s lives every day.

Lighter, smaller, quieter, more responsive and energy-efficient: these are just a few of the significant advantages EAP offers over traditional actuators, generators and sensors.

But beyond these features, EAP is as versatile as the feedback it generates. At a fraction of a millimeter thick, our proprietary technologies can be form-fitted into a wide array of end-products, integrating EAP seamlessly so that actuation can augment a broad spectrum of end-user experiences. And with ten years and over 70 patents’ worth of expertise behind us, the Artificial Muscle team has the expertise and resources to bring countless more end-user visions to life.

Now commercialized exclusively by Artificial Muscle Inc, EAP technology consists of a thin layer of dielectric polymer film sandwiched between compliant electrodes. When voltage is applied across the electrodes, the electrodes attract each other and the film contracts in thickness and expands in area. This basic operation can be seen below.

We transform the EAP film into an actuator with mechanisms that convert the film’s expansion into motion in the desired directions, allowing EAP to achieve significant motion with less power as compared to other technologies.

In addition to fast response times, our actuators’ performance boasts nearly silent operation volume. And given this entire package is a fraction of a millimeter thick, our EAP technology is remarkably customizable, able to match the needs of your product by way of any design imaginable.

ViviTouch™ has transformed mobile gaming by immersing players with a new dimension of tactile feedback. Applied to smart phones, tablets, handheld consoles, mice, control pads and other gaming peripheral products, AMI has dedicated itself to bringing ‘real feel’ to gamers on the go.

Outside of mobile gaming, ViviTouch™ is collaborating with a wide-range of partners in sectors ranging from Remote Controls and Casinos to Special Needs (Braille) and Automotive Dashboards.
