(Before It's News)

You’ve dropped your phone…just admit it. Now that you’ve moved beyond the denial stage, it’s time to embrace the fear that you felt during that instant that your phone slipped into the realm of the unknown. As your momma told you when you were growing up, you better wear protection…nowadays, that applies to smartphones in particular. We’re in a world where people walk around like zombies staring into small screens, running into poles, tripping and clumsily letting their phones fall while attempting to place it in their pocket.

There are plenty of manufacturers out there that offer protection for your phone – while there’s no shortage of options, amongst a variety of design types. Those that offer minimal protection, those that offer maximum protection and those that attempt to bridge the gap between the two. Ballistic makes cases for all kinds of devices, and I’ve had the opportunity to tote around their Ballistic SG case for iPhone 5 over the last couple weeks. At $34.99, the question for me was: “Is this thing expensive enough to actually offer good protection?”

While I’m not surprised, based on my previous experience with a Ballistic SG case, I generally approach new reviews from an almost pessimistic mentality, looking for the product to really wow me to get my approval. Once again, Ballistic wins out as this case hits on the points people look for.

Design

Similar to other cases from Ballistic, the SG case incorporates three layers of protection:

Ballistic SG Layers

1 – a shock absorbent polymer

2 – an impact resistant polycarbonate shell

3 – soft silicone with the trademarked Ballistic Corners

The SG case also makes it possible to comfortably lay your device face-down, without fear of scratching the screen.

Protection

In my testing, the Ballistic SG case held up to that various follies I experienced. I had a few clumsy drops from desk-height, several drops on the center console of my car and even the greasy-finger test. My iPhone 5 came away unscathed from each drop, and the case itself was able to walk away unblemished after a few run-in’s with some greasy meals. Being as I donate all of my earnings here at GS to charity, I opted out of testing the full-height tests such as throwing my phone off the roof or dunking it through a hoop. That said, for what us normal users are going to encounter, my bet is that the Ballistic SG will stand up to what life throws at you.

Price

Again, the SG rings up at $34.99, and for a case that offers more protection than slimmer cases, without the hulking mass of the extra heavy-duty cases, this isn’t too much to cough up when a new screen is an alternative choice.

Where can you buy it?

Ballistic sells the case on their site, and you can also procure it at a local shop by visiting one of their resellers or distributors, located here.
