Big Story Weather from November 20: Heavy snow fell across the Montana Rockies and also some very heavy rains hit the Pacific Northwest with some places seeing over 4in of rainfall. The rest of the United States enjoyed high pressure and very tranquil weather.
Weather Outlook for November 21: High pressure over Arkansas will bring partly cloudy skies to the Southern Plains and all the way over to the East Coast today. A developing storm system will begin to push into the Montana region and we will see warm rains along with mountain snows throughout the region from Eastern Washington into Idaho and Montana. The cold front will extend back into California bringing showers to the region. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

International Weather Outlook for November 21: Low pressure over Northern Japan will bring some cold rains and possibly snow to the higher elevations. Another low over Southern Japan will bring showers to the region. High pressure over the Tibetan Plateau will bring nice weather to Eastern China and also the Koreas for today. An area of low pressure is beginning to move towards England which will bring showers to the region and also extensive cloud cover to Western Europe. Area of low pressure will move across Southern Africa bringing showers to the region. Low pressure over Western Australia will bring cloud cover and some showers and high pressure over the Southeast part of Australia will bring nice conditions. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Tokyo Japan: Mostly Cloudy with a few showers and a low near 7C.
Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 20C.
Singapore: Mostly Cloudy with a low near 24C.
Athens Germany: Partly Cloudy with a low near 5C.
Perth Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 18C.
November 21, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving in towards England will bring showers to the region. Another low pressure is moving across the Central Atlantic which will increase the winds and seas around the area. A third area of low pressure is now pushing off the Carolina coast and will slowly push towards the Northeast.
North America: Area of low pressure is moving across Southern Canada which will bring showers and mountain snows to the West and Pacific Northwest over the next few days.
Eastern Pacific: An area of low pressure getting ready to push off the Central America and will make its way out to the open sea causing no impacts at this time. An area of low pressure is moving into the Central Gulf of Alaska which will bring strong winds, high seas and precipitation to the Alaskan coast over the next few days.
Western Pacific: Low pressure area just to the Northeast of Japan is bringing a few showers and mountain snows to Northern Japan, while another area of low pressure is moving over Southern Japan which will bring showers to the region
Indian Ocean: There is one area of deep convection located just to the east of India which will bring showers and isolated thunderstorms to the coastline through the day.
Southern Hemisphere: A low pressure system is sitting in the Southern Pacific moving towards the southeast and currently has a moderate chance of become a tropical system.
Five Day Storm Index Outlook for November 21-25:
Baltimore MD: High pressure will keep this region impact free through Thanksgiving and the early part of the weekend with no major impacts forecasted.
Orlando FL: High pressure will also make this region enjoyable for Thanksgiving with no impacts forecasted over the next five days.
Dallas TX: A quiet start to the period and then by the 25th the region will see a frontal boundary begin to move into the area which will bring a slight chance of impacts.
Minneapolis MN: The region should be nice. Expect to see good turkey day weather followed by a weak frontal boundary for your Black Friday shopping may bring some slight impacts into the region.
Billings MT: The warm front is moving through the area right now bringing with it showers and some slight impacts to the area. This will continue into Thanksgiving before a nice day for shopping on Friday followed by another frontal system on the 25th will bring back slight impacts to the region.
Climate Watch for November 16-20:
Baltimore MD: The period started with temps around 3-5 below average and then slowly warmed to around 1-2 below average to finish the period out.
Orlando FL: Temps started 2-8 degrees below average and then got colder as temps fell to around 18 degrees below average, however yesterday they warmed back up to around 4 degrees below average.
Dallas TX: Temps started about 1-3 degrees above average and then continued to warm to around 2-8 degrees above average followed by yesterday being around 16 degrees above average.
Minneapolis MN: Temps started the period around 1-2 degrees above and then continued to warm around 14-17 degrees above average and then finished the period around 16-20 degrees above average.
Billings MT: Temps have been running about 6-14 degrees above average to start and then warmed to around 16-20 degrees above average towards the end of the period.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for November 21, 2012:
Day 1-3: High pressure over Arkansas will bring nice weather to the region from the Gulf Coast westward into the Southern Plains and also along the Eastern Seaboard. A strong low pressure system begins to move into the Northern Rockies bringing with it higher elevation snows and also heavier rains to the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest. The middle of this period will have an area of low pressure working up the East Coast and also a frontal boundary moving through the Midwest back into Oklahoma. Another frontal boundary will push on shore over the Pacific Northwest. The end of this period will have an area of low pressure moving into the Great Lakes and Northeast a very strong high pressure moving in over the Northern Plains and then the frontal boundary over the Pacific Northwest.
Day 4-7: The period will start with stronger winds in the Northeast with the low just to the north of Maine and also strong high pressure over the Southeast, and a weak frontal boundary moving through the Northern Plains. An area of high pressure will build in over the West Coast allowing for a break from all the moisture in that region. The middle of this period will have strong winds over the Northeast again from gradient winds along with high pressure over the southeast and a developing low pressure over Texas and Oklahoma. The low pressure will be producing snow back over the Eastern Rockies. High pressure will still be in control of the weather over the West Coast. The period will come to an end with the high pressure pushing off the East Coast and a low pressure beginning to push into the Gulf Coast region bringing showers and thunderstorms. Strong high pressure will quickly build in behind this low allowing for some very cold air to settle in over the Southern Plains. Another warm front begins to push into the Pacific Northwest.
Day 8-12: This period will begin with a 965mb low over the East Coast which will have plenty of coastal rains and very heavy mountain snows which may work their way into the bigger cities towards the end. Strong area of high pressure will be settled in over Texas bringing some very cold air to the region. Another frontal boundary will begin pushing on shore over the Pacific Northwest. The middle of this period will have our strong low pressure continuing to work up the East Coast bringing very strong winds, storm surge and heavy rains and even heavy snow to some places. The strong area of high pressure will be over Mississippi during this time period. Another strong low pressure will be sitting just of the West Coast bringing showers to the Pacific Northwest.
Day 13-15:The period will start with the low pressure finally moving out of the Northeast as high pressure shifts into the area which will bring some very cold air to the region this high will also bring cold air to the Gulf Coast and Southeast during this time. The high pressure will bring fair and warmer conditions to the Northern Plains as the southerly flow sets back up. The strong low pressure system over the Pacific Northwest will move on shore bringing increased rains and winds to the region. The middle of this period will have high pressure on both coasts along with a frontal boundary moving through the Plains region. The end of the period will have high pressure along the east coast with a strong low pressure system moving through the Plains and Great Lakes which will bring heavy rains, thunderstorms and even snow to some places. Also look for a possible Gulf Low to start taking shape towards the end of the period.

Wednesday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of heavy rain and breezy with winds near 15-20mph along with a high near 45F, overnight lows will be near 35F.
Thursday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of heavy rain and a tad bit warmer with a high near 48F, winds from the Southeast around 5-10mph and overnight lows around 40F.
Friday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of rain some which may be heavy look for a high near 47F, with the winds from the Southwest around 2-7mph and an overnight low of 34F.
Saturday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of light rain and a high near 47F, winds from the Southeast 2-7mph and overnight lows around 34F.
Sunday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 44F and overnight lows down to around 29F, winds will be light and variable with a high chance of seeing frost in the Metro area.

Question: Why do storms get so strong when they get of the Carolina coast?
Answer: This is another weather area that we have to constantly watch for. When low pressures move across the region they will hit the warm Gulf Stream and explode into big storm systems such as Sandy and also the more common winter storms that impact the Northeast. This warm water just fuels the storm allowing for it to get strong really fast.

Wave Energy: The frontal boundary moving across the Pacific Northwest will bring some nice swells to the region creating some good wave energy. Also a low pressure system moving off the Southeast coast will bring some moderate waves to this area as well today.
Solar Energy: High pressure over Arkansas will bring nice weather to the Southeast, Gulf Coast and Southern Plains making this area prime for solar energy today. Also the Northeast will see nice conditions for solar energy today.
Wind Energy: The frontal system that is located along the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies will make this region great for wind energy today. Some places may actually get winds that are too strong, however the overall pattern makes this area favorable for wind energy today..
Hydro-Energy: All the rain along the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern Rockies is making this area prime for hydro energy again today. Also the higher elevation snows are creating a snow pack for future hydro energy release later in the spring of next year.
November 21 Weather and Your Wallet (Austin TX):
Dining: A very mild day will make for an excellent chance to get out and have lunch in the park or an outdoor diner. The temps will be nice all day leading to no impacts.
Transportation: A great day to do your Thanksgiving travel in the region if you have not yet. Partly cloudy skies will have no impacts on the roads and they should remain dry for the period.
Shopping: As you get ready for the biggest shopping day of the year the weather in the region is going to be very nice, not only today, but also Friday making for an excellent chance to catch the bargains.
Electricity: A great morning to open the windows and let the fresh air in and should be a great day all together there may be a small period after lunch where you might want the AC as we are looking for 1.5 Cooling Degree Days today.
Agriculture: No major issues impacting the fall cleanup around the house and the gardens.
Construction: A nice day if you are out working the construction business today with no impacts expected for the region.
Outdoor Venues: A nice day to get out and enjoy some outdoor activities such as walking the dog at the park or down the street and just a nice afternoon to take a book to the park and read it.
