Big Story Weather from November 22: Most of the United States enjoyed Thanksgiving Day with tranquil weather and plenty of sunshine, however some places around the Great Lakes dealt with some thick fog and many travel headaches. The Northern Plains saw some moisture in the form of snowfall over the region and the Pacific Northwest dealt with more showers and cloudy conditions along with mountain snows.
Weather Outlook for November 23: Low pressure moving through the Great Lakes will bring showers to the southern lakes and also snow showers around Michigan and Superior Lakes. A very strong area of high pressure is beginning to make its way into the Northern Plains which is going to bring very cold air to the region with high temps only in the 30’s and overnight lows in the Dakota’s in the teens. High pressure over the Rockies will keep the region dry and also the Southwest will remain dry, while a few lingering showers will be found in the Pacific Northwest still. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

International Weather Outlook for November 23: Low pressure to the Northeast of Japan and the trailing frontal boundary will bring extensive cloud cover to the region, while high pressure builds in over Eastern China bringing partly cloudy skies to the region and also into the Koreas. A weak return of monsoonal moisture will be present over Southeast Asia today. High pressure over Eastern Europe will bring partly cloudy skies to the region. Low pressure moving into Spain will bring showers to the area and an area of low pressure moving into England will bring showers to the region. A frontal boundary will move through the Southern tip of South America bringing with it a few showers. High pressure will bring partly cloudy skies to Eastern Australia. Low pressure will impact Western Australia with cloudy skies and a few areas of showers. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Shanghai China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 8C.
Manila Philippians: Partly Cloudy with a low near 22C.
Singapore: Mostly Cloudy with a low near 24C.
London England: Mostly Cloudy with a few Showers and cool with a low near 7C.
Brisbane Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 21C.
November 23, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving into Spain will bring strong winds and heavy rains. An area of low pressure moving just north of Bermuda will bring stronger winds to the northern coast of Bermuda, however the rest of the storm should remain north of the region.
North America: A strong area of low pressure is moving through the Great Lakes today bringing with it rain on the warm side or the eastern side and colder snow to the northwestern side around the Western Great Lakes.
Eastern Pacific: Low pressure moving across the Central Pacific will make its way towards the California coast over the next few days. Another area of low pressure is developing to the north of Hawaii which will also move slowly towards the East. A very strong low pressure system is turning in the Gulf of Alaska bringing with it extensive showers and strong winds from the West coast of Canada all the way north into Alaska and a few showers are even into the Pacific Northwest.
Western Pacific: Low pressure is moving to the Northeast of Japan and out towards the open seas. This storm will slowly move towards the Gulf of Alaska over the next few days.
Indian Ocean: A broad area of convection located in the South Central portion of the region should remain away from any land and have no impacts outside of mariners.
Southern Hemisphere: An area of low pressure is located to the Northeast of Australia this morning. The region has winds around 25kts and a pressure of 1004mb and there is a moderate chance that this system could become a tropical system over the next 24-36 hrs.
Five Day Storm Index Outlook for November 23-27:
Buffalo NY: There is a chance of seeing slight impacts today with a few showers moving through the area, then look for a Moderate impact to start on the 25th with the arrival of the first potential lake effect snows starting to setup. This will carry through until the 27th when the region will go back to slight impacts for snowfall on the day.
Gulfport MS: The period will start out very nice with high pressure bringing no impacts to the region. On the 26th a storm system will begin to move in bringing a slight chance of impacts for the region followed by a moderate chance of impacts on the 27th with some strong thunderstorms that could lead to damaging winds and heavy rainfall in the region.
Sioux Falls SD: Today a few remaining snow showers could still create a slight impact in the region followed by the rest of the week looking cold with no impacts forecasted.
Boise ID: A nice start to the period. Looking for slight impacts to move into the region in the form of rain showers by the 26th and 27th.
Portland OR: A quiet day today followed by a very busy weather pattern of showers moving in to the region creating slight impacts for each day from the 24th through the 27th.
Climate Watch for November 18-22:
Buffalo NY: Temps started the period about 3-7 degrees above average followed by a warming trend of temps running around 6-10 degrees above average for the remainder of the period.
Gulfport MS: Temps started the period around 3 below average followed by a warming trend with temps rising to around 1-7 degrees above average.
Sioux Falls SD: Temps started the period around 18-19 degrees above average followed by a record setting day of temps running around 31 degrees above average. The period finished with temps around 17 degrees above average.
Boise ID: Temps started the period around 8-16 degrees above average and then slowly fell to around 4 degrees above average to finish the period out.
Portland OR: The period started with temps around 2-7 degrees above average and then a cool down occurred with temps falling to around 1 degree below average to finish the period.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for November 23, 2012:
Day 1-3: A frontal boundary moving through the Great Lakes will bring rain to the Eastern Lakes, while the potential for snowfall exist along the Western Lakes. High pressure building in over the Northern Plains will bring nice conditions to the region, also high pressure in the Rockies will bring nice weather to the region.
Day 4-7: The period will start with High pressure off the East Coast and a developing low pressure over the Southern Plains which will bring showers and thunderstorms to Texas and Oklahoma. A weak frontal boundary will also extend through the Northern Plains bringing a few showers and snow showers to the Dakota’s. High pressure will control the weather along the West Coast. The middle of this period we will see the frontal boundary extending from the Northeast all the way back into the Gulf Coast where we could see some strong to marginally severe thunderstorms in the region. Strong high pressure will be building in over the Plains. High pressure over the Rockies will bring nice weather to the entire west. The period will end with the low pressure moving into the Northeast will the frontal boundary pushing off the East Coast. High pressure will be in control of the weather over the entire Midwest and Plains region extending into the Southeast and Gulf Coast. A very strong low pressure system will begin to push slowly eastward and the associated frontal boundary will begin to bring showers to the West Coast.
Day 8-12: The period will begin with a strong low pressure system to the north of Maine bringing strong winds and precipitation to the Northeast, while a weak area of high pressure will be over the Mid-Atlantic region and another developing low will be forming over Southern Texas during this time bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region. The frontal boundary will be pushing on shore over the Pacific Northwest bringing increased showers and mountain snows to the West Coast. The middle of the period will have a strong high pressure center over the Northeast, while a 996mb low will develop over Colorado and slowly push eastward and another frontal boundary will make its way over the West Coast bringing showers to the region again. The period will finish with a strong 988mb low over the Dakota’s bringing with it heavy rain and also the potential to see heavy snow on the western side of its track through the Dakotas. The frontal boundary will extend down to the Gulf Coast where strong thunderstorms could develop. Another weak low pressure system will begin to push towards the Pacific Northwest.
Day 13-15: The period will see the high pressure move off the East Coast allowing the strong low pressure over the Northern Plains to finally push eastward bringing with it showers and snow showers to the Northern portion and also strong thunderstorms to the southern portion of the frontal boundary.

Friday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 24F, winds from the Northwest around 15-20mph as overnight lows fall to around 17F.
Saturday: Partly Cloudy and warmer with a high near 35F, winds from the Northwest around 10-15mph as overnight lows fall to around 26F.
Sunday: Partly Cloudy and cooler with a high near 24F, winds from the Northwest around 10-15mph as overnight lows fall to around 14F.
Monday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 24F, winds will be from the Southwest around 7-12mph as overnight lows fall to around16F.
Tuesday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 28F, winds will be from the Northwest around 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 17F.

Question: What is the difference between rain and showers?
Answer: Sometimes you may hear the television weatherman say that there is a chance for rain, while other times they may say there is a chance for showers. So what is the big deal? Why such a difference? The first difference is that rain falls from cumulus clouds, while showers fall from stratus clouds, and both have different impacts. For example, rain comes with thunderstorms so it’s possible that it could be very heavy and create flooding. When showers arrive they sometimes last all day long but might not be very heavy, where rain comes and goes quickly usually.

Green Energy Weather Report for November 23:
Wave Energy: Another day of larger waves along the Pacific Northwest and the California coast due to the interaction between passing low pressures to the north and the sub-tropical high to the southwest of California. This will provide excellent wave conditions for the next few days.
Solar Energy: High pressure over the Southeast will bring great solar conditions. Also look for the Mid-Atlantic to see some good solar energy producing today and then high pressure over the Southwest will bring nice solar energy to the region.
Wind Energy: Frontal boundary moving through the Great Lakes will bring stronger winds to the region making it a great source area for wind energy today. Another area will be along the Pacific Northwest in the mountains where we can expect to see some great wind energy conditions.
Hydro-Energy: The best region today will be in the Great Lakes as rain will fall along the Eastern Lakes and also the Western Lakes will see some snowfall to accumulate into the region allowing for future hydro energy production.
November 23 Weather and Your Wallet (Atlanta GA):
Dining: This morning you will need a jacket as you’re out and about eating at those famous outdoor shops on this busy shopping day. Tonight expect to need a jacket as temps fall rapidly after sunset.
Transportation: A nice day with no impacts, even with all the extra shopping traffic on the roads today.
Shopping: As you enjoy the “National Shopping Holiday” weather should be good. You might want a jacket this morning and again this evening if you’re still out and shopping.
Electricity: Looking for some cooler air to be in place which will lead the region to see a 11.0HDD with the most impacts occurring between 9PM-5AM.
Agriculture: A light freeze may be possible this evening so it’s important to cover up those crops.
Construction: A nice day if you are out working the construction business today no impacts expected for the region.
Outdoor Venues: Trying to get out and head to the park to get rid of that turkey meal? Today will be a nice day to get outside. Just make sure to bring a jacket if you are attending any outdoor venues this evening.
