The upcoming ITU World Conference On International Communication which is supposed to take a decision on the future of the web, has seen some sharp criticism from Google. The company seems to be fundamentally opposed to making decisions about the web behind closed doors by policy makers without even asking for a consensus from a general populace. Governments are by design opposed to the idea of a free and open web due to various geopolitical status quos. The emerging bunch of Internet users are however not very keen on restrictions on the web.
Google seems to be the foremost voice against the closed doors conference and it may have its underlying motive to do so. Google generates its revenue because the web is open and free to innovate upon. Restrictions on the web will result in a lot of problems for free and open communication and usage, which will no doubt affect the search giant. Even if that may be the case, the cause that Google is championing is not really wrong. The web was born open sourced and as has become what it has because of the open nature of its development and usage. Theoretically, Governments should not have any power to regulate it.
However, this is not the case and there has been continued struggle between Internet companies, free web advocates against policymakers around the world. The truth of the matter is that the web is dynamic and this results in rapid shifts in existing paradigms. Who would have thought that our phones would take care of most our Internet needs or that millions of people would streaming content instead of the age old downloading bit. Finally, I feel that their regulations will fail catastrophically since it will very difficult for these bodies to actually enforce regulations around the world.
Google has set up a website which gives information on this particular topic and asks users to sign up and ‘act now’ against this manner of ‘closed doors’ policy discussion that the UN is engaging in. The Internet is about people and not about Politics.
What are your thoughts about this conference and the regulation of the web in general? Share them with us.
