Indian Companies Employing Stricter ‘No Personal Devices At Work’ Policy; Employees Crying Foul?

(Before It's News)

Employees who work in large organizations must have recently faced a stricter policy concerning personal electronic devices. A recent survey conducted by ISACA has revealed a more stringent development wherein companies are routinely banning their employees from bringing their personal communication devices (cell-phones, tablets, smartphones, etc) at work.

The report which spanned over one Lakh IT audit, security, risk and governance professionals has revealed that almost half of the companies are enforcing a blanket ban on ‘Bring Your Own Devices’ (BYOD) policy. India currently leads in such dictatorial practices with 46% companies enforcing the ban, followed by Europe (39%) & China (30%). USA is comparatively liberal with only 29% companies supporting the ban.

Is the ban justified? The paranoia displayed by the companies is justified. The smartphones used by the employees have some serious security issues. More so, people routinely neglect to safeguard their devices against intrusion. Coincidentally, many companies often are weak in their defenses themselves. Hence, more the number of unverified devices mean more the options available to hackers or data thieves to gain unlawful entry into companies’ confidential data. Limiting the number of devices used to access confidential data can in turn limit the backdoors available to such people with malicious intentions.

Is banning the only solution? Though it is exceedingly clear that companies are banning the use of personal devices, employees do try to flout the rules. More often than not, the hardware handed-out to employees for communication purposes is obsolete & does little else than making calls & sending emails. Personal devices, on the other hand, are almost always cutting-edge or latest in technology. Hence instead of a blanket ban, ISACA advocates an ‘Embrace-and-Educate’ approach. In other words, ISACA urges companies to educate employees about safe-practices while using devices for company work.

While companies will always have to remain vigilant, can the employees themselves refrain from using their personal devices at work?
