Security issues for mobile communications will continue to challenge security professionals as the number and variety of mobile devices continues to grow, a panel of experts said during the SC Congress Chicago conference and expo Thursday.
Mobile security solutions are being developed as needed, and will evolve with the hardware devices, said Chexni Wang, vice president at Forrester Research . She foresees Web access devices becoming ever smaller, with storage soon falling by the wayside as people use handheld devices primarily for access and little else. This will eventually lead to the common availability of wearable computers.
The challenge for companies will be how to ensure their employees adhere to an organization’s security policies, particularly with the growing popularity of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies that don’t limit the type of device an employee uses. With BYOD, the company no longer has to maintain licenses for security and other software on the devices that employees use, said Larry Whiteside, Jr., director of IT security, risk and compliance for Spectrum Health Systems.
However, ensuring that these devices adhere to company security policies is challenging, the panelists said. If the employee owns the device, he or she may not feel obligated to follow the firm’s security policies, so companies need backend control (blocking access for devices that don’t meet security requirements) to ensure that employees take the necessary precautions, panelists said.
Panelists agreed that a company’s security has to start with employee education so that they understand how they can be impacted by an organization’s security breach.
