(Before It's News)

In what would be described as a logical move for the popular Indian music streaming service, Saavn has just announced the launch of Saavn English in India. The service will now make available a catalog of popular English Music that has around 250,000 songs as of now.

Saavn has become popular with Indians and Bollywood-o-philes all over the globe because of its initial focus on Bollywood and Indian music. The addition of English/International music will only cement its popularity in India. India has around 125 million English speaking people and a significant amount of them listen to globally popular English music. Some of the artists that the service has managed to license for the service are C/DC, Aerosmith, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Billy Joel,  Bob Dylan, Carrie Underwood, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, INXS, Jimmy Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Justin Timberlake, Kings of Leon, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Miguel, Oasis, Pink Floyd, and Usher, Bob Marley, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, David Guetta, Jennifer Lopez, and Kanye West. They have partnered with Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group to make this happen.

Paramdeep Singh, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Saavn spoke about the new development

“As the nation with the second-largest population of English-speakers in the world (just over 125 million people), India is a prime market for Western music. At Saavn, our aim has always been to provide a wide genre of music to our users, and the introduction of Saavn English is a testament to our success in providing Saavn’s users with complete music entertainment.”

According to Saavn, the initial number of songs available is just the beginning and will increase with the feedback and usage they receive. Saavn and other Indian streaming services will greatly reduce piracy, in my opinion. You always have access to the music and these days everyone is using Internet to listen to great music. To think that illegal downloading of content will go away completely because of this move would be overly optimistic, but I believe these services have the capability of reducing the piracy to a significant amount. The model of streaming music for free and monetizing on the basis of ads is a welcome concept.

Saavn, with this move, clearly has the upper edge on services like Spotify, Rdio and Pandora which are very popular abroad but have been disappointing Indian users since quite some time now because they do not offer their services in the country despite growing demand. Saavn has managed to fill this gap nicely and will in my opinion do well in a country which currently which is seeing a surge of demand for International music and artists.

Note: Looks like Saavn English hasn’t gone live yet. I will update with the link when it does.

Disclosure: Saavn is an advertiser with WATBlog.
