The Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III may be Samsung’s two 1-2 punching flagships, but that doesn’t mean the company completely ignores the other end of the market. For instance, those looking for a cheaper and smaller phone have the Galaxy S III mini. Spec wise it was a bit of a letdown. But for some, the smaller size is the only thing that matters.
For those of you looking for a more affordable smartphone that still packs a big screen, Samsung’s new Galaxy Express might just fit the bill.
For starters, it is powered by a fast 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. Unfortunately, as of right now we don’t know exactly which brand of processor this is, and that makes all the difference. For if it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, it will be more than powerful for such a low priced phone. Moving on, a 5-megapixel camera is stashed ’round back while a 2,000 mAh battery ensures decent battery life when under stress. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is (unfortunately) the shipping OS.
What we find most perplexing is that this “first time smartphone buyer”/mid-range device ships with a better display (on paper at least) than the Galaxy S III – Super AMOLED Plus (non-Pentile) vs. the S III’s simple Super AMOLED (PenTile). The Express’ display, you see, features a true RGB pixel arrangement which results in (usually) clearer text, more accurate colors and overall better image quality. Granted, the big string attached is the fact that the Express’ display is packing only 480 x 800 resolution (207ppi). In the modern smartphone world, such a resolution isn’t really considered all that great, especially on a screen as large as 4.5-inches.
All things considered, the fact that Samsung and AT&T are making the Express available for $99 (beginning November 16th) means it’ll certainly be worth keeping on eye on heading into the holiday season.
