Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was the world’s top selling smartphone during the third quarter, holding 10.7 percent of the global smartphone market and surpassing Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4S for the first time ever, according to new figures from research firm Strategy Analytics.
The iPhone 4S was the second most popular model, with 9.7 percent of the market, followed by the iPhone 5 (released in late September) with a 3.6 percent global market share, the firm said.
Shipments of Galaxy S3 grew from 5.2 million in the second quarter to 18 million in the third quarter, while iPhone 4S shipments fell from 19.4 million in the second quarter to 16.2 million in the third quarter.
The S3’s large 4.8-inch touchscreen, extensive distribution, generous operator subsidies and the fact that Apple buyers likely delayed purchases ahead of the iPhone 5 launch all played a role in propelling Samsung’s flagship device to the top position, Strategy Analytics said.
However, the firm predicts iPhone 5 shipments will eclipse those of the S3 during the fourth quarter of 2012.
“We expect the new iPhone 5 to out-ship Samsung’s Galaxy S3 in the coming fourth quarter of 2012, and Apple should soon reclaim the title of the world’s most popular smartphone model,” Strategy Analytics said in its announcement.
Apple shipped more than five million iPhone 5 handsets in the three days after its launch, and a total of six million devices during the third quarter.
