Small Business Saturday: 5 Tips to Make Sure It’s Your Day To Shine

(Before It's News)

Holidays fast approaching. Christmas decorations in stores now. No news there; I even wrote a few tips on holiday sales here and there. You might still feel completely overshadowed by Big Brother Brick-and-Mortar, and rightly so. But never fear, because you actually have your own version of Black Friday on the horizon: Small Business Saturday.

Black Friday is the penultimate day of deals (and crazy people, but we won’t go into that here). Cyber Monday is the other bookend to the shelf upon which consumers enter a feeding frenzy. Right in the middle there, though, is Saturday, November 24 – your day to shine particularly bright. How bright, you may ask? According to Small Business Saturday, 100 million people or so. That’s a lot of light bulbs.

Constant Contact’s  Jason Fidler recently let us know to not forget to mention this rather important day to small businesses everywhere. “While promotions and deals are certainly worth consideration,” he said, “their traffic-driving potential cannot be realized if no one knows about them.”

Indeed. While 100 million is a great number from last year, how many of those shoppers perused your business? Or bought from you? In that vein, how many people did not even know what the heck a “Small Business Saturday” was, exactly? How many more millions could be brought to the fold, and more importantly, how can you put your business out there?

Fortunately, Small Business Saturday’s website provides helpful information that is completely free and easily accessible. I think you owe it to your own bottom line to at least check this stuff out and see how you can utilize it to help get your business seen on that Saturday. Leave the midnight headaches and fistfights over laptops to the Black Friday Big Brothers; Saturday is your day.

Jason also had some tips to share with you regarding Small Business Saturday:

  • Pay attention to search engines. This will be important for your business to be among the top of the listing for relevant search terms, especially to pique the interest of new customers beginning their holiday shopping.
  • Think about smartphones. Consumers are increasingly using mobile devices to quickly find good shops in the area. It’s important to look at location-based applications such as Foursquare and Facebook Places.
  • Make sure you consistently update any and all of your Small Business Saturday specials to your online channels, as well as other advertising outlets.
  • Host an event to guarantee foot traffic on Small Business Saturday.
  • With all these promotional efforts, don’t forget about social media. Your Facebook and Twitter pages can be used to further amplify your Small Business Saturday specials and events.

Your day is coming fast; it’s already November and time is short. Think of ways you can get your business noticed on Small Business Saturday and be prepared!
