Security is an issue that needs to be managed across a company’s entire supply chain, a panel of experts said during the recent SC Congress Chicago conference and expo.
Though at first glance supply chain issues might seem far removed from mobile payments, it is essential to secure all points o f a network because once malware enters one area, it can infect other parts of the network as well, meaning that a person accessing a company’s Web site to make a payment can pick up malware from an infected Web site. The site itself can become infected if the network becomes infected. Of course, there are security measures to eradicate these infections before they get too deep into the network, but the best security, experts agree, is to stop malware from entering the network in the first place.
In order to do so, companies have to be diligent about ensuring that any equipment that accesses the network is secure. So need companies need to be diligent about communicating throughout the supply chain about the need to secure devices accessing the network, said Everette Hubbard, information security manager for HNI Corp., the world’s second largest furniture manufacturer
Too often someone within a company will simply add a laptop or another device, and may even turn on embedded security features (e.g., Windows security on a new laptop), but that may not be enough to ensure the device meets corporate security standards, according to Hubbard. He stressed that ongoing communications between security professionals and executives throughout the supply chain is essential.
