Twitter Gives Tweetro (And Windows 8 Users) The Finger
Tweetro, a popular Windows 8 Twitter client recently revealed that they had bumped up against Twitter’s ridiculous 100,000 user token limit for apps that “replicate the core Twitter experience”. And because the app was useless at that point, the developers had to pull Tweetro from the market. Many hoped that Twitter would budge on their 100,000 token limit so that Tweetro could continue onward with the new wave of Windows 8 users snapping up Surface RT tablets and other Windows 8 devices. Unfortunately, it isn’t happening. Twitter seriously hates you.
Today, Windows Observer posted a response that Twitter sent back to Tweetro developers after back and forth dialog over raising the 100,000 token limit failed.
“Thank you for reaching out to get clarification on our developer policies. As you know, we discourage developers from building apps that replicate our core user experience (aka “Twitter clients”). We know that there are developers that want to take their passion for Twitter and its ecosystem to unique underserved situations. As such, we have built some flexibility into our policy with regard to user tokens – which went into effect September 5th, 2012.”
“…Unfortunately, It does not appear that your service addresses an area that our current or future products do not already serve. As such, it does not qualify for an exemption.”
It would be one thing if Twitter had a good Windows 8 app available to the masses. But they don’t. Hell, they let a fantastic Mac app die and whither away, turning it into abandonware. Mobile is all the seem to care about these days, though, once couldn’t exactly call the various mobile apps “good”, either.
Making matters even worse for Windows 8 users in particular is the fact that while Twitter beats this drum about “not replicating the core Twitter experience”, they have yet to actually push out their own dedicated Windows 8 app, and there’s no timeline on when they will. Until then, Twitter users are indeed left with a second rate experience – a sub-par twitter.com experience.
What makes this all so frustrating is that Twitter is only as big as it is today because so many various 3rd parties rallied around the service and created their own apps that cater to different sectors of Twitter’s user base. What one person feels is the most efficient and enjoyable Twitter experience for them isn’t the same to the next person. And now, Twitter is shitting on those very same grass roots supporters, the developers, that allowed Twitter to enjoy the success it’s garnered today.
If you’re a Windows 8 fan and avid Twitter user, you have a few options.
- Keep using Twitter on Windows 8 via twitter.com only
- Avoid Windows 8 and use apps like MetroTweet for Windows 7
- Avoid both Windows 8 and stop using Twitter and take wait for the new MySpace to launch (or ADN if you want to keep the same pace
- A fourth option is to wait for Tweetro to release their new paid app that users will have to be required to purchase to keep using Tweetro with Twitter on Windows 8. But let’s be honest. Do you really want to keep supporting a company as hostile to users as Twitter is becoming?
