With a 55% market share, Apple continues to be the world leader in the tablet market. The bad news is that is the lowest market share the iPad has enjoyed since its launch. This piece of information comes from a recent report by ABI Research. In fact, its market share lost by 14% in the third quarter of this year largely on account of Android tablet makers like Samsung, Amazon and ASUS all of who have been steadily eating into the iPad’s share of the pie.

Apple

Said Jeff Orr ABI’s senior practice director, “With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year.” ABI Research also said that the iPad mini did not make incursion into the Android market share when it was launched. Instead, “the iPad mini has caused demand for standard iPad models to shift down-market” and that the limited availability of the iPad mini ”could be the saving grace as the end-of-year buying ramps.”

Android tablets taken together enjoy a 44% share of the market. However there are several firms that share this and no one manufacturer has anywhere near the share of Apple. “As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers – new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content,” said Orr.
