Australian Pineapple Features A Coconut Flavor Twist

Australian scientists are working on a new species of pineapple that could have a twist of coconut flavor added in.
The Department of Agriculture in Queensland state is in the final stages of developing the new variety of the fruit, AusFestival pineapple.
“Taste tests tell us that AusFestival is a winner — it has this lovely coconut flavor, which you won’t find in any other pineapple in Australia,” horticulturalist Garth Senewski told the Australia’s ABC. “It’s sweet, low acid, very juicy.”
He said the researchers did not intend to create the pineapple with a twist of coconut at first, but was looking for a variety of pineapple that was sweet, low acid and aromatic.
“When we’re doing the breeding, we’re not actually looking for a coconut-flavored pineapple or any other particular flavor,” Senewski told ABC.
“Taste tests tell us that AusFestival is a winner – it has this lovely coconut flavor, which you won’t find in any other pineapple in Australia,” he said.
AFP reported that it will be two years before the first AusFestival pineapple trees are planted commercially.
Scientists in Queensland developed Australia’s first home-grown pineapple two years ago, known as the Australian Jubilee.
With its warm climate, Queensland produces over 80,000 tons of pineapples a year. However, the government has been looking to create less costly and tastier varieties to compete with the cheaper, imported products.
Senewski said the pineapple is now in its final stages of production, and is currently being multiplied by commercial development partners. He added that it usually takes about 10 years to commercialize a new variety of pineapple.
