Big Story Weather from December 7-9: What a weekend! We had everything from tornadoes to blizzards and cold weather this past weekend. The Northeast saw some lake effect snows. The biggest story of the weekend was the Northern Plains where they saw winds as high as 45mph along with heavy snowfall; some places saw over 1 foot of snow while the majority of the places saw around 4-8 inches. There was also severe weather this weekend that stretched from Eastern Texas northward into Arkansas which then shifted east into LA/MS overnight. The back side of this front in Western Texas was cold enough that the region saw some of its first snowflakes for places like Amarillo TX.
Weather Outlook for December 10: The strong low pressure system will move into the Northern Great Lakes today. Expect to see showers and snow showers towards the Northeast. The Mid-Atlantic and Southeast along with the Gulf Coast will see showers and even some thunderstorms in the southern regions. High pressure over Texas will bring partly cloudy skies along with strong cold air into the region as frost and freeze warnings have been issued for Southern Texas. The Northern Plains will be dry and cold today as many places will not get out of the Teens while the West Coast will finally be dry. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

International Weather Outlook for December 10: Low pressure moving Northeast away from Japan will bring partly cloudy skies to Northern Japan, while high pressure slowly slides across Eastern China which will bring partly cloudy skies to the rest of the region. Low pressure moving through Eastern Europe will bring some clouds, light showers and snow showers to the region. High pressure to the north of England will make for a very nice day. A tropical system will be moving towards Madagascar which will bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region. High pressure will bring nice weather to Southern Australia, while areas of low pressure will bring showers to Northern Australia. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Tokyo Japan: Partly Cloudy with a low near 2C.
Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 22C.
Singapore: Partly Cloudy with a low near 25C.
Brussels Germany: Partly Cloudy with a passing shower and a low near 1C.
Sydney Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 20C.
December 10, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving through Eastern Europe will bring showers and higher elevation snows to the region. Another area of low pressure is moving towards Northern Africa which will increase clouds in the region. Low pressure is also moving towards Iceland and Greenland and will bring increased winds/seas along with moisture to the area. Low pressure will be moving through the Northern part of the Great Lakes bringing showers, snow showers and thunderstorms to the majority of the East Coast and Southeast United States.
Eastern Pacific: Low pressure is moving in from the date line towards the east and will be moving into the Hawaii region over the next couple of days bringing increased moisture to the region.
Western Pacific: Low pressure moving through Central Russia will bring showers and snow showers to the region around Moscow. A second area of low pressure is moving away from Japan towards the Gulf of Alaska over the next few days.
Indian Ocean: Tropical Cyclone Claudia is moving slowly towards the Southwest and as of this morning has winds around 105kts with a pressure of 944mb. It is slowly moving towards Madagascar.
Southern Hemisphere: An area of low pressure is well to the west of South America however it will begin to move towards the Southern part of South America this week. Also an area of low pressure has developed near Northern Australia this area of low pressure will bring showers to the region.
Five Day Storm Index Outlook for December 10-14:
Boston MA: A few passing showers today will put the area into a slight impact. The remainder of the period will be nice with no impacts forecasted.
Atlanta GA: The region will see showers and thunderstorms begin to move in later this afternoon putting the area into a slight impact for today into tomorrow and then high pressure will bring no impacts for the remainder of the period.
Sioux Falls SD: High pressure will have no impacts on the region for the next five days just cold weather in the area.
Boise ID: The period will see snow showers over the next couple of days mixing in with rain possibly on the 12th which will leave the region in a slight impact through the period. The 13th looks to be impact free before the next chance of snow moves in on the 14th putting the area back into a slight impact.
San Diego CA: The region will start out dry for the first three days with no impacts forecasted, however an area of low pressure will move through on the 13th bringing with it the chance of seeing some thunderstorms in the area and a slight impact. By the 14th the region will be impact free again.
Climate Watch for December 5-9:
Boston MA: The period started out very warm with temps around 12 degrees above average and then a cold front moved through bringing the temps down to around 3 below average, followed by another warm up with temps back to around 3-6 degrees above average.
Atlanta GA: The period started very warm with temps around 8-13 degrees above average and then continued with temps staying around 12-16 degrees above average.
Sioux Falls SD: The period started with temps around 20-21 degrees above average followed by significant cool down as temps fell to around 2-3 degrees above average for the end of the period.
Boise ID: Temps started around 19 degrees above average but then fell to around 4-6 degrees above average and finished the period around 1 degree below average.
San Diego CA: The temps started about 1 degree below average and then warmed to 1 degree above average before falling again to around 1-3 degrees below average for the remainder of the period.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for December 10, 2012:
Day 1-3: The strong frontal boundary will move through the Ohio River Valley and also down through the Gulf Coast. This will be the area for concern for heavy rains and also some severe weather. High pressure over Texas will bring nice weather to the region and this will extend northward into the Plains and also look for nice weather up and down the West Coast with a few lingering snow showers over the Northern Rockies. The end of the period will see another area of low pressure develop near the coast of Florida and move towards the Northeast. High pressure will build in over the Northeast and back into the Gulf Coast region. A low pressure will develop in the Southwest bringing rain and higher elevation snows to the region.
Day 4-7: High pressure along the Eastern Seaboard will bring nice weather to the region. A weak clipper system will be moving through North Dakota and Northern Minnesota bringing a few snow showers to the region. Low pressure will slide into Arizona bringing with it showers and mountain snows to the south. Another weak frontal boundary will start to slowly push towards the Pacific Northwest. The middle of the period will have low pressure moving through the extreme Northeast US and high pressure along the majority of the East Coast. Another low will push into Oklahoma and with this we will see heavy rains and even snows on the back side into Kansas. High pressure will push in towards the Southwest US and a weak frontal boundary will continue to work towards the Northwest.
Day 8-12: The period will begin with low pressure moving into the Ohio River Valley bringing with it rain on the warm side and also snow on the Northwest side towards Ohio. Look for the frontal boundary to extend into the Gulf Coast region with showers and thunderstorms likely. High pressure will be over the southwest, while a frontal boundary begins to push across Manitoba CA and also extends into North Dakota. A strong low pressure system will now be working its way into Seattle WA creating heavy rains along the coast and heavy snows in the Cascades. The middle of the period we will find another low moving through the Great Lakes which will bring rain and snow to the region along with the frontal boundary extending into the Gulf Coast region. High pressure will be building in over the Rockies while another low approaches the Pacific Northwest. The period will end with a strong area of high pressure over the Northeast and Great Lakes. Along with that we will be watching a significant storm system push into the Southern Plains bringing heavy rains and possible severe weather to the region on the backside in the Southern Rockies we will be dealing with snow.
Day 13-15: The period will start with another major winter storm over the Great Lakes region with places getting some very heavy snowfall. To the eastern side of that along the Mid-Atlantic region will be dealing with heavy rains. The frontal boundary will push showers into the Gulf Coast region as well. High pressure will be over Southeast Texas as another low begins to develop in the Southwest. The period will end with another potent winter storm moving through the Northern Plains and Great Lakes region and we will also be watching closely for heavy rains and even a wintry mix towards Oklahoma and into Arkansas and possibly Northern Mississippi and Tennessee during this time period.

Monday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of showers and a high near 63F, winds will be from the Southwest around 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 45F.
Tuesday: Partly Cloudy and cooler with a high near 48F, winds from the Northwest at 10-15mph as overnight lows fall to around 32F.
Wednesday: Partly Cloudy and cooler with a high near 45F, winds from the Northeast around 5-10mph as overnight lows fall to around 30F.
Thursday: Partly Cloudy and a tad bit warmer with a high near 48F, winds from the Southwest 2-7mph as overnight lows fall to around 28F.
Friday: Partly Cloudy and warmer with a high near 52F, winds from the Southwest around 2-7mph as overnight lows fall to around 30F.

Answer: A great question posted to our Facebook page! The best way to answer this is first, we need to have winds that are strong enough to blow the falling snow and also the snow that is already on the ground. Secondly, we need snow both snow falling from the air and also snow that is already on the ground. When these combine together we get what is called a blizzard.

Green Energy Weather Report for December 10:
Wave Energy: The largest area for wave energy today will be along the Northern Gulf of Mexico ahead of the cold front.
Solar Energy: High pressure building in over the Northern Plains will make that region good for solar energy along with Texas and back into the Southwest.
Wind Energy: The cold front that extends from the Great Lakes southward into the Gulf Coast region will be providing plenty of wind energy from the Dakotas southward into Texas and eastward up into Arkansas and the Great Lakes. This large area will see winds in the 25-35mph range with some lighter winds possible.
Hydro-Energy: The Northwest Rockies around the Idaho area will see some snow showers move through today which will provide the region with some storage hydro energy. The large cold front that extends from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast will also be a great area for hydro energy for places like the lower Mississippi River Valley northward into the Ohio River Valley and also up into portions of the Northeast.
December 10 Weather and Your Wallet (Austin TX):
Dining: A very cold day in store, so if you plan on eating outdoors make sure to bundle up as it will be cold.
Transportation: No problems expected today with driving.
Shopping: If you are heading out to do some shopping today you will definitely want a jacket as it’s going to feel very cold.
Electricity: Look for the use of heating all day as it will be in very high demand during the overnight hours as we look for 26HDD’s.
Agriculture: This evening and through the overnight hours make sure to bundle up your sensitive plants as it will be cold enough for a light freeze in the area.
Construction: A nice day with no weather impacts other than make sure to bundle up as it will be cold working the long hours outside.
Outdoor Venues: Taking the dog or cat for a walk today could be a cold outdoor adventure. However, if you’re bundled up, it will be sunny.
