Big Story Weather from December 12: The snow and rain returned to the Northwest and there were some snow showers found to the Western Great Lakes near International Falls MN. The other big story was the moderate rains that fell along the Southeast and into Florida with some places seeing very heavy rainfall. The third big story of the day was the cold air that plunged into the Gulf Coast with many places seeing freezing conditions for an extended period of time.
Weather Outlook for December 13: A frontal boundary will move through Southern Florida today bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region. High pressure sliding into the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast will bring nice weather to the majority of the country all the way into the Northeast. A frontal boundary and associated low moving over the Rocky Mountains will bring rain and higher elevation snows to the region. Look for a break along the Pacific Northwest before the next frontal boundary moves in by this weekend. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

International Weather Outlook for December 13: High pressure over Japan will bring partly cloudy skies to the region and will extend westward back into the Koreas. High pressure over the Tibetan Plateau will bring nice weather to most of South Asia. A trough moving through Western India will bring showers to the region and higher elevation snow showers. High pressure over Western Russia will bring partly cloudy skies to the region and this will extend into Eastern Europe as well. A very strong area of low pressure and the associated fronts will begin to approach Western Europe and England which will bring showers to the region. An area of low pressure is moving along the southern tip of South America and will bring showers to the region. High pressure will bring partly cloudy skies to Southeast Australia and an area of low pressure over Western Australia will bring showers to the region. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Tokyo Japan: Clear with a low near 5C.
Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with isolated showers and a low near 17C.
Singapore: Partly Cloudy with a low near 23C.
London England: Partly Cloudy with a few rain showers and a low near 2C.
Sydney Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 14C.
December 13, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving into Western Russia will bring showers and higher elevation snow to the region. Low pressure moving into Greenland will bring showers and snow. A tropical wave moving across the Atlantic will continue to bring moderate winds and seas to the open oceans. A weak area of low pressure will develop of the coast of Spain during the overnight hours.
Eastern Pacific: Low pressure moving into the Rockies will bring showers and mountain snows. Another area of low pressure is beginning to move out of the Gulf of Alaska and will bring snow and higher seas to Southern Alaska today.
Western Pacific: Low pressure moving well east of Japan will move into the Gulf of Alaska this weekend. Another area of low pressure is moving into Central Russia this area of low pressure will bring showers and snow showers to the region. An area of low pressure to the west of India will bring showers and mountain snows to the region.
Indian Ocean: No major weather systems in the region.
Southern Hemisphere: Tropical Cyclone Evan is currently near the city of Pago Pago and the island of Tutuila bringing strong winds and rain along with storm surge to the area as winds are estimated to be around 65kts with a pressure of 974mb. This system will continue to strengthen over the next couple of days. Low pressure to the Southeast of South America will bring a few showers back to the region as it moves eastward. Low pressure is moving through Northwest Australia bringing with it plenty of rain and thunderstorms. Tropical Cyclone Claudia is moving slowly towards the South and as of this morning has winds around 40kts with a pressure of 993mb. It will continue to weaken and move southward towards colder waters.
Five Day Storm Index Outlook for December 13-17:
Buffalo NY: A tranquil start to the period followed by a chance of snow moving in on the 16th and 17th as the impacts will increase to a slight range.
Gulfport MS: High pressure will keep the weather quiet for the next few days. Around the 16th thunderstorms will move into the region increasing it to a slight impact. Look for the chance of some strong thunderstorms on the 17th which will increase the impacts to moderate.
Sioux Falls SD: High pressure will slowly slide out of the region and bring a chance for snow to move back in on the 15th and 16th leaving the region with a slight impact.
Boise ID: Nice weather for the start of the period followed by a chance of snow on the 16th and 17th which will bring a slight impact to the region.
Portland OR: Nice today followed by four days of rain which will put the region into slight impact for the period.
Climate Watch for December 8-12:
Buffalo NY: The period started with temps around 7-15 degrees above average and then after the cold front passed temps fell to around 2 below average but quickly returned to 2 above on the 12th.
Gulfport MS: Temps were running around 6-9 degrees above average followed by a sharp drop behind the cold front as temps fell to a record 17 degrees below average and then warmed to around 4 degrees below average.
Sioux Falls SD: The period started with temps around 3 degrees above average and then the cold front moved through and brought temps to around 9 degrees below average followed by another warm up as temps rose to around 23 degrees above average on the 12th.
Boise ID: Temps were around 4 degrees above average and then fell to around 1 degree below average followed by another warm up with temps running around 6-8 degrees above average.
Portland OR: The period has seen temps ranging from around 1-6 degrees above average the entire period.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for December 13, 2012:
Day 1-3: High pressure moving through the Southern Plains will bring nice weather to the region and this will expand eastward into the Ohio river Valley and also northward into the Northeast. A frontal boundary extending across Southern Florida will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region. A frontal boundary moving through the Rockies will bring rain and snow to the region, while the Pacific Northwest has one nice day today. During the middle of the period our low pressure will move into the Central Plains bringing with it showers and higher elevation snows. The period will end with the low pressure moving into the Great Lakes and with limited moisture should create some snow in the region and a weak frontal boundary will extend to the Gulf Coast.
Day 4-7: The period will start with the low moving into the Eastern Great Lakes bringing snow and rain to the region. It will gain more strength along the Gulf Coast creating heavy rain and thunderstorms. High pressure will be over the Southwest as another frontal boundary moves into the Pacific Northwest. The period will end with high pressure along the East Coast and the frontal system will move into the Northern Plains bringing precipitation to the region.
Day 8-12: High pressure will push off the East Coast allowing for a strong frontal system to move into the Great Lakes and bring the chance for some moderate snows. The frontal boundary will extend back into the Gulf Coast with showers and thunderstorms. A strong high pressure area will start to ridge into the Northern Plains. Another frontal boundary will begin to push on shore over the West Coast. The middle of the period we will see a large area of high pressure over the Northern Plains bringing some very cold air into the region. There will also be a large area of low pressure sitting off the West Coast pushing small pulses into the area during this time. The period will end with a few showers and snow showers in the Northeast along with the strong high pressure still in the Northern Plains bringing very cold air to the region. A low pressure area will begin to develop in the Southwest Gulf of Mexico and another storm system will be impacting the Northwest.
Day 13-15: The period will start with the potential of lake effect snow of the Eastern Lakes as the high pressure continues to dominate the majority of the country with strong cold air in place. Another frontal boundary will be pushing on shore in the west. The middle of the period will have the strong high finally pushed into the East Coast, while a low pressure system moves into the Plains and another frontal system will push on shore over the Northwest.

Thursday Night: Hurricane Force conditions with winds as high as 100mph along with very heavy rain and high storm surge.
Friday: Hurricane Force conditions along with very heavy rain and thunderstorms as high temps rise to around 85F, look for overnight conditions to continue hurricane force wind gust along with a low of 82F.
Saturday: Tropical Storm Force conditions with a high near 86F as overnight lows fall to around 84F.
Sunday: Mostly Cloudy with thunderstorms and a high near 86F, winds will be from the Northwest around 20-25mph as overnight lows fall to around 84F.
Monday: Mostly Cloudy with thunderstorms and a high near 84F, winds from the Northwest around 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 82F.
Tuesday: Mostly Cloudy with thunderstorms and a high near 86F, winds will be from the Northwest around 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 84F.

Question: What makes a Nor’Easter?
Answer: A Nor’Easter is a special storm in that what makes it up is a low pressure system comes out of the Gulf of Mexico and works its way up the coast. The winter time is more supportive of this pattern and the tricky thing about these types of storms is to forecast the accurate path. The reason this is hard is this could be the difference in a Heavy Snow storm or a Rain storm. If this low tracks west of the I-95 interstate then the large cities get heavy rain. However, if this low tracks to the East of the large cities then they get heavy snowfall. The storm itself can have very strong winds and even create its own storm surge.

Green Energy Weather Report for December 13:
Wave Energy: A frontal boundary extending across Southern Florida will increase the seas in the region bringing some good wave energy. The approaching frontal boundary along the Pacific Northwest will bring another region of good wave energy to the area.
Solar Energy: High pressure over the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast will bring nice weather and great solar energy to the region. This will spread into the Ohio River Valley and also up into the Northeast. The Eastern edge of New Mexico will also see one last day of nice weather for solar energy.
Wind Energy: The frontal boundary that is moving into the Rockies will bring some great wind energy to the region.
Hydro-Energy: Southern Florida will see showers and thunderstorms which will provide good hydro energy to the region, while also the frontal boundary moving through the west will bring some good snow pack to the region for future energy uses.
December 13 Weather and Your Wallet (Dallas TX):
Dining: A light jacket will be needed this morning if you are grabbing a quick breakfast on the way to work. If you have plans to go out for lunch, the weather will be great today.
Transportation: No impacts expected today so a nice day to hit the bike and get some exercise this afternoon as temps will be in the 60’s.
Shopping: You will need a jacket this morning if you are shopping, otherwise a nice afternoon to hit the malls.
Electricity: This morning and again this evening you will need the heater for a while as temps fall to around 46F, looking at using about 12HDD’s today to stay warm.
Agriculture: No impacts on the agriculture in the region. Should be a good day to head out to the farmers market and support the local farmers.
Construction: You will need a jacket this morning as you start work but by this afternoon it should be a nice day.
Outdoor Venues: Taking the dog for a walk this morning? You will need a jacket this morning but this afternoon will be great to spend some time in the city park or going for a jog or walk.
