Big Story Weather from December 17: Low pressure moved through the Great Lakes and Northeast which brought rain and snow to the region. A second area of low pressure moved through the Gulf Coast bringing thunderstorms and rain to the region. High pressure over the Southwest brought a nice day to the region. Another potent low pressure moved through the Northwest bringing blizzard and heavy snows along with rain along the coast.
Weather Outlook for December 18: Low pressure is moving towards the Northeast coast which will bring a few showers and snow showers to the region. High pressure building in over the Gulf Coast will bring nice but colder weather to the region. A low pressure moving through Montana will bring a few isolated snow showers. We are watching an area for future low pressure development in the Southwest where there will be a few showers and snow showers in the region. The West Coast looks to have an nice day today. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

International Weather Outlook for December 18: Low pressure moving through Northern Japan will bring snow showers to the region of Sapporo, while it will bring showers to the capital region and also parts of the Southern Region. High pressure over Eastern China will bring partly cloudy skies and this will extend into the Koreas. A weak area of low pressure over the Tibetan Plateau will bring partly cloudy skies with a few light snow showers to the Central China region. High pressure over Western Russia will bring partly cloudy skies. A strong area of low pressure will begin to approach England and Western Europe increasing the cloud cover overnight. A small area of high pressure will setup over the tip of South America and bring nice weather to the tip. Low pressure moving to the Southeast of Australia will bring a few showers to the region, otherwise look for high pressure to move in from the west which will bring nicer weather to the west coast of Australia. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Sapporo Japan: Cloudy with light snow and a low near -5C.
Shanghai China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 1C.
Singapore: Mostly Cloudy with a few showers and a low near 22C.
Madrid Spain: Partly Cloudy with a low near 9C.
Perth Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 12C.
December 18, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving out of Eastern Europe will move into Russia. A strong area of low pressure is moving into England and will bring an increase in showers and cloud cover to the region. Another area of low pressure moving out of the Northeast US will move towards Iceland.
Eastern Pacific: A strong area of low pressure is moving towards California and should be into the region by later this week bringing heavy rains to the region once it arrives along with mountains snows. Another low pressure is moving into Alaska which will bring more snow to the region. Another area of low pressure is also moving into the Western Gulf of Alaska this morning.
Western Pacific: An area of low pressure is moving into Eastern Russia which will bring precipitation to Moscow over the next 24 hours. A low pressure over Northern Japan is bringing snow to the region along with rain back into Tokyo. A third area of low pressure is to the east of this and is slowly moving towards the Gulf of Alaska. A tropical wave has developed near 5N and 167E which this morning has winds around 15kts and a pressure of 1010mb. It shows a weak potential for development over the next 24hrs.
Indian Ocean: There is one area of low pressure along the monsoonal trough this morning moving through Southeast Asia.
Southern Hemisphere: Tropical Cyclone Evan is currently to the south of the Fiji area with very strong winds and high seas along with heavy rainfall. Winds are estimated to be around 95kts with a pressure of 952mb. This system will begin to weaken as it makes its way towards the south. Low pressure to the east of South America will slowly push away from the region, while another area of low pressure is slowly making its way towards the region.
Five Day Storm Index Outlook for December 18-22:
New York NY: A few showers this morning and then becoming partly cloudy with the next chance of showers and impacts arriving on the 20th with slight impacts.
Orlando FL: High pressure over the region will keep it impact free for the next couple of days before the next frontal boundary moves in increasing the chance to slight impacts for the area.
Sioux Falls SD: High pressure should keep this region fairly tranquil over the next five days with no impacts forecasted.
Boise ID: The region will start with no impacts, however by the 20th a frontal system will put the region back into a slight impact with snow showers being possible.
San Diego CA: A few showers in the region this morning which will give some slight impacts, followed by a tranquil remainder of the period.
Climate Watch for December 13-17:
New York NY: The period started with temps around 2-5 degrees above average and stayed that way until the 17th when temps fell to around 1 degree above average.
Orlando FL: The period has been warm with temps running around 14-15 degrees above average and then fell to around 6 degrees above average to finish the period.
Sioux Falls SD: The period started with temps around 6-15 degrees above average and then a cold front moved through dropping temps to around 1-2 degrees below average.
Boise ID: The period started with temps just below average followed by a warm up with temps rising to around 3-12 degrees above average.
San Diego CA: The entire period has seen temps ranging from around 1-5 degrees below average.
Major Weather Impacts Discussion for December 18, 2012:
Day 1-3: The wrap around moisture from the front that is off the East Coast will bring some rain and snow showers to the Maine area. Also look for high pressure along the Gulf Coast which will bring nice cool weather to the region. A new developing storm system will begin to take shape over the Southwest later this afternoon. A frontal boundary will still bring a few mountain snows and valley rain showers to the Northwest. The middle of the period will have high pressure along the East Coast, while the low pressure and associated frontal boundary moves into Missouri which will have thunderstorms to the south and snows on the north side of its track. Another frontal boundary will push on shore over the Northwest. The period will end with the low pushing into the Great Lakes, while a strong area of high pressure builds in over the Northern Plains and another frontal boundary will be impacting the Pacific Northwest.
Day 4-7: The period will start with the low moving into the Northeast. We will also see some lake effect snows kick up over the Eastern Lakes and the region will be dealing with strong winds that could reach 45-55mph in many places. High pressure will push towards the Ohio River Valley bringing some colder air to the region. The warm front will still be sitting over the Pacific Northwest. The period will end with a wave developing in the Northern Gulf of Mexico pushing rain showers along the Gulf Coast and another low will be pushing into the Southwest during this time.
Day 8-12: The period will start with a low pressure in the Southwest that will slowly push eastward bringing with it moisture to the Gulf Coast and also some snow to the Northern Plains. A weak area of high pressure will build in over the West Coast. December 25 and 26th we will be dealing with a potent winter storm and severe weather system sitting over the Southern Plains with the low pressure over Eastern Texas, there will be thunderstorms on the front along with snow in Western Texas. Another frontal boundary will be approaching the Pacific Northwest. The middle of the period will have another low back into the Great Lakes region with the associated frontal boundary towards the Gulf of Mexico. A weak area of low pressure will be along the West Coast during this time.
Day 13-15: The period will start with the low pressure up the Eastern Seaboard along with a strong area of high pressure building in over the Northern Plains which will bring some very cold air to the region. Another weak low pressure will be building in the Southwest. The New Year’s Eve period we will be looking at a high pressure along the East Coast with another low pressure area developing along the Gulf Coast. A strong area of high pressure will build in over the West Coast.

Tuesday: Partly Cloudy with a high near 65F, winds from the Northeast around 5-10mph as overnight lows fall to around 47F.
Wednesday: Partly Cloudy and mild with a high near 71F, winds from the Southeast around 8-13mph as overnight lows fall to around 49F.
Thursday: Mostly Cloudy with areas of thunderstorms and a high near 67F, winds from the Northeast at 10-15mph as low temps fall to around 59F.
Friday: Partly Cloudy with a high near 58F, winds from the North around 8-13mph overnight low temps will fall to around 36F.
Saturday: Partly Cloudy and warmer with a high near 63F, winds from the Southeast around 5-10mph as overnight lows fall to around 38F.

Question: What is the importance of the freezing line?
Answer: One of the most important things that we look at during the winter is the freezing line and we look for it in the upper atmosphere not near the surface. We are usually looking for it at about 10,000 to 12,000ft because this is low enough in the atmosphere that we could see snow fall in many places, even if the surface air temperature is above freezing like in the 32-38F range

Green Energy Weather Report for December 18:
Wave Energy: The front pushing off the East Coast will provide the region with some good waves from the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast. A second area will be again along the Pacific Northwest.
Solar Energy: High pressure pushing in over the Gulf Coast will bring some nice conditions supportive of solar energy for the Southern Plains and also into the Ohio River Valley.
Wind Energy: The Northwest will still see some moderate winds in the region.
Hydro-Energy: The Pacific Northwest will see mostly snow in the higher elevations today which will help build the reserves up for this spring and also a few snow and rain showers in the Northeast.

Agriculture: No impacts to the region, but a good chance to get the winter snow removal equipment ready for later this week.
Construction: A nice day to be outside as long as you bundle up with plenty of warm clothing.
Outdoor Venues: A nice day to take the dog for a walk in the park however you and the dog will want your winter coats on.
