FileMaker Go For iPad And iPhone Surpass 500,000 Downloads

FileMaker’s decision to make its iOS apps free has paid some dividends when it comes to popularity. The Apple subsidiary has announced that it passed the milestone of 500,000 downloads today.
FileMaker Go is the iOS version of the longstanding desktop software, which serves as a touch-friendly bridge for database building. It has much of the Apple design aesthetic with a powerful set of features for building and maintaining databases for education, business, or other uses.
“Businesses are using the FileMaker Platform to create solutions that manage everything from sales contacts to medical information on iPads and iPhones.” said Ryan Rosenberg, vice president, marketing and services, FileMaker, Inc in a statement. “We are very happy to see FileMaker Go pass the half-million downloads mark. This rapid adoption demonstrates FileMaker’s position as a leading platform for development and deployment of custom business solutions for iOS.”
One example company advocates point to is West Paw Design, which creates eco-friendly pet toys, beds and apparel. Like many other companies managing a database of products can often be a challenging undertaking. The pet company said the use of FileMaker Go meant employees could input data and manipulate information on-the-fly with an iPad instead of doing so manually or retreating back to a workstation.
Another area that is seeing more FileMaker use is education. According to company representatives, New York City’s Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences has deployed iPads to all teachers with FileMaker serving as the core technology for monitoring student data.
Assistant Principal of Organization Michael Weinstein said the city’s progress report rating, which is based on student outcomes and peer comparisons, has moved from a “B” to “A” grade. The rapid access to data has improved the capabilities for teachers to discuss and monitor student information, he said.
“FileMaker Go has brought up-to-the-minute, actionable student information right into the classroom. It’s making all the difference in supporting teachers in their mission to improve student achievement.”
FileMaker is a hefty piece of software; while the iOS version is free, the desktop suite can be rather expensive. One license on the Apple Store is $299, with the servers reaching into the thousands of dollars.
For Apple and FileMaker, however, including a well-built piece of software to run on the seminal iOS line of devices is proving to be an attractive strategy.
