Earlier last month, a publication with a very mixed record when it comes to Apple rumors announced we could see a new iPhone as early as Q1 2013.
According to DigiTimes, Apple will begin testing these new iPhones this month (perhaps they’ve already begun) and will release them in a matter of months. Last week, French site Nowhereelse.fr posted pictures from a forum called iPhone5Parts in which they claim they are the back panel of a new, improved iPhone 5S.
So far, we’ve got an often misguided news publication and an Internet forum joining in on the new iPhone chatter. Now all that remains is an analyst’s note to suggest Apple will be releasing a new iPhone sooner than expected.
And just like clockwork, The Business Insider is citing Jefferies analyst Peter Misek as saying Apple will break from their 2-year strong tradition of releasing a phone in the fall and get back on a summer schedule.
According to Misek, the new iPhone 5S will be quite the improvement, complete with “super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC.”
Misek also predicts the revised iPhone 5 will ship with “an IGZO screen for Retina+,” as well as a 128 GB option and availability in 6 to 8 colors.
According to his note, Apple could release such a phone in June or July of next year, breaking from their fall schedule.
Misek isn’t content to make predictions about the details and timing of the next Apple iPhone, of course. The Jefferies analyst also makes mention of several iPhone 6 prototypes which he believes are currently floating around. If Apple holds to their “tick-tock” release schedule, (3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5) then the iPhone 6 is likely due out next year, or sometime following the iPhone 5S.
“Several iPhone 6 prototypes appear to be floating around. The model with a 4.8″ screen is the most interesting. It has a Retina+ IGZO screen, a new A7 quad-core processor variant, and a new form factor with no home button. Full gesture control is also possibly included.”
Misek’s claims do seem to fall in line with new and recent chatter, but they also revive a few long-standing rumors.
For instance, better battery and NFC claims are staples in the iPhone rumor game. Every year, with every cycle, analysts make these claims. In fairness, Apple often makes some improvements to the battery, but usually by increasing the performance while making sure the battery still gets its 8 hours of runtime.
An iPhone in color and in 128 GB has also been a long-standing rumor for several rumor cycles now. Though these rumors are familiar, it doesn’t mean they can’t have a shred of truth to them. Apple could always try these features in prototype models before scrapping them in the end.
According to MacRumors, Misek is also reviving the subsidy-free, value-priced iPhone rumor, saying Apple is ready to release an iPhone at a $200- $250 price point.
This rumor is likely to be 100% false, given Apple didn’t have a problem pricing their iPad mini at greater than $299.
Misek also claims Apple will be releasing the 5th generation iPad and 2nd generation iPad mini around the same time, bringing a slimmer screen to the iPad Proper and a Retina screen to the iPad mini.
