In the U.S., TV viewing occupies more space in a day of the consumer currently than mobile applications. But the usage of mobile apps is on the rise and will soon surpass TV just the way it did to PC web scanning. Is the latest technology helping us or are we becoming slaves of the gadgets?
According to statistics of the U.S. Bureau of Labor in 2010-2011, a person was watching 168 minutes of TV on a daily basis. Mobile apps viz. tablets, smart phones etc. are eating onto this time. There has been a 35% jump in the usage of mobile apps compared to last year. A person now spends about 70 minutes on a desktop as against 127 min. on mobile apps. Together they both make 197 minutes which is more than 3 hrs a day. If you add the 168 minutes of TV time into this, a person will be spending 6 hrs of the day on mobile apps. Point to ponder is, does that leave any time for activities other than working and sleeping?
If you look at the latest trends in mobile apps, the approximate distribution of the time spent on various activities will be as shown in the table below,
Activity | Time spent in % |
Games | 43 |
Social networking | 26 |
Entertainment | 10 |
Utilities | 10 |
Health, Lifestyle, News,etc. | 6 |
Others | 5 |
The primary usage is gaming which is less than last year’s 50%. Then comes social networking which is again a bit low than last year (30%) Entertainment and utilities usage is on the rise and others are picking up.
Although the mobile apps are very user friendly, where will you fit in your personal time for friends and family? Is this a healthy sign? Are tablets, smart phones etc. taking control of our lives? Can we strike a balance between the gadgets and the personal space? Only time will tell.
