When it comes to making optimum usage of available resources, Mumbai’s Air Passengers seem to be at the very forefront, according the SITA/Air Transport World Passenger Self-Service survey. Spanning over 2500 respondents, the survey tried to gather insights & perceptions about the Mobile ecosystem & the passengers who routinely travel in airplanes. A total of 6 International airports were covered including Atlanta, Abu Dhabi and Beijing, Sao Paulo, Frankfurt.
Despite India having a Social Media penetration of just 5%, over 86% of air passengers were found to be active on social media sites. Additionally, Social Media usage patterns were also calculated & it was observed that the youth aged 18-24 was highly active (80%) as compared the elders (39%). As mobile phones & social media phenomenon has been crazily adopted by the young, this statistics should not come as a surprise.
The other interesting aspect that came forth was these passengers routinely preferred to book their tickets through mobiles. Passengers in Mumbai, Sao Paulo and Beijing are more inclined on mobile booking air tickets, than those from Frankfurt and Atlanta. Ironically, “Passengers in regions with a low penetration of smartphones and available booking apps generally show a stronger interest in using mobile technology to book tickets,” said the survey.
As airlines & airports themselves continue to ‘Go Social’, these numbers seem to be merely an extension of the world’s obsession to be socially connected & available. Smartphones & tablets are undoubtedly the most widely available & usable interface device. Hence, the statistics seems to merely corroborate what we have been witnessing lately. What do you think?
