Quick Review: Cherry Mobile Flame
It seems that a lot of affordable dual-core, dual-SIM Android phones are coming out these days and here’s another one from Cherry Mobile. Let’s take a quick look at the Cherry Mobile Flame which is priced at just Php6,299.
Perhaps the Cherry Mobile Flame’s selling factor is its 4.5-inch qHD display. That’s 960 x 540 resolution for you with a decent 245 ppi pixel density. You won’t miss the bright, sharp display when you turn on this phone. It puts itself into the same class as that of the HTC One VX and Lenovo P770 display-wise.
Build is typical of Cherry Mobile phones with a piano black glossy finish on a plastic shell. There’s a tiny Power button on top that’s almost flushed flat on its body that pressing it feels awkward. Same thing with the tiny volume controls on the right side.
The back has a soft, smooth, matte finish with the 5-megapixel camera lens slightly protruding. This phone is a rebrand of the Karbonn A21 by the way.
This phone supports dual-SIM, dual-standby on regular-sized SIM slots. Only the first slot can handle 3G while you’re stuck with 2G on the second one. Using both SIMs for sending SMS or calls is as easy as clicking either the SIM 1 or SIM 2 buttons on the app window.
Under the hood of the Flame is a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor. It belongs to the first generation Snapdragon (MSM7627a) so the CM Flare has an advantage here. if you’re wondering what other phones use the same dual-core chip, there’s the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus, ZTE Render, and Motorola Defy XT to name a few.
RAM is stuck at 512MB while internal storage is at 4GB with about 2.6GB available to the user. You can slap in a microSD card for more space though.
Despite the dual-core arrangement, I find the interface slow. I mean navigating between homescreens and app screens has that noticeable lag, like the UI has a slow motion effect. However, composing messages, scrolling through my Twitter feed, or playing games is quite responsive. I’m guessing this can be fixed with a software update.
This phone uses a 1800mAh battery which i haven’t really tested that much yet. Just had it on standby with occasional installs and it’s still at 71% after a day and 18 hours.
At Php6,299 you have to think hard before purchasing this phone. The qHD 4.5-inch screen is really nice but the poor UI experience will put a frown on your face unless Cherry Mobile fixes it soon. The Cherry Mobile Flare is still the a worthy alternative if you don’t mind the smaller 4-inch screen (or if you can find one). There’s also the bigger 5-inch Cherry Mobile Titan for Php200 more.
