2013 might just turn out to be a killer year for mobile platforms! We have Blackberry launching BB 10 on January 30th. We also have Mozilla’s promising FireFox OS to look out for this year. Adding to this is a mobile design and development company, Jolla which has been working on its own open source mobile operating system. The startup is made up of Nokia employees that broke off from the company when it decided to stop its Meego OS efforts and partner with Microsoft for its Windows Phone OS. Jolla continued working on Meego and subsequently developed Sailfish.
They demoed their smartphone OS recently and Engadget has a detailed video which shows all the functionality.
After looking at the OS, I am convinced that is this will be a damn strong competitor to the others. The OS looks modern and gives users many new ways to interact with it. iOS, Android and others involve tapping whereas Jolla has some very good gesture support. The demo shows how it can cut a lot of time and enable you to use the phone without having to look at the screen all the time. The ambience part of it is really nice and gives some very good customization abilities. The only missing parts are the apps but they will come when the platform gets enough buzz and usage. The OS is supposed to work on many different hardware platforms due to its open source nature which is similar to Android. I am very impressed by the UI and I would love it if Nokia partners with Jolla for a one-off phone with this OS.
What are your thoughts about Sailfish? Will it make you give up your iOS/Android phone?
