After being in the news for its growth numbers, the telecom sector seems to have entered the deceleration phase & has been losing subscribers for some time now. Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular who collectively own 2/3rd of the total subscriber base of India, have collectively lost more than 6.7 million customers in the month of November itself. In all, as per Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), GSM companies totally lost more than 9 Million subscribers.
What’s the cause?
Since the advent of GSM connections, users in India have adopted the mobile technology with enthusiasm. However, owing to wildly differing tariffs, many kept more than one connections. Additionally, thanks to the ‘Life Time’ connection schemes, several users activated the feature. But that only resulted in enhanced dormancy as mobile users with 2 or more SIMS rarely used the other ‘standby’ one.
While these users do nothing more than block bandwidth, the companies seem to have entered in the consolidation phase & are actually losing customers. Apparently, shedding this inactive baggage allows the companies to bring operational efficiency. Additionally, they can now focus on the subscribers who actually bring in the revenue.
India’s mobile subscriber base had famously crossed the coveted 1 Billion mark recently. According to Cellular Operators Association of India ( COAI) Market leader Bharti Airtel, which has a 27.66% share, lost 2.80 million users. It now has 183.61 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Vodafone shed 2.38 Million & is now holding 150.76 million. Interestingly, state run MTNL & BSNL seem to be least affected by this phenomenon.
