Well, this seems to be the beginning of the ‘First World Problems’ for Twitter. Twitter is giving space preference to URLs over space for tweet characters when URLs are involved.
This will create a hullabaloo among its users what with them having to sacrifice two crucial character spaces for t.co wrapper. So the maximum length of non-https URLs has increased from 20 to 22 from 21 to 23 characters for https URLs. This change will come into effect from February onwards but the announcement was made earlier to stabilize things for the developers. However no reasons were given for the change. Make use of the existing (probably convenient) situation as much as you can before you need to make more sacrifices for space.
