Welcome to Yet Another Science Blogging Community: Phenomena! [Confessions of a Science Librarian]

(Before It's News)

Yes, the science blogging community has certainly seen some gyrations in the last few years with a bunch of new networks sprouting up, sometimes from the ashes of other networks, sometimes completely on their own.

The latest is Phenomena: A science salon hosted by National Geographic magazine.

Phenomena is a gathering of spirited science writers who take delight in the new, the strange, the beautiful and awe-inspiring details of our world. Phenomena is hosted by Jamie Shreeve, Executive Editor for Science at National Geographic magazine, who invites you to join the conversation.

So far at least, it’s quite small with only four bloggers.

But what bloggers they are!

  • Only Human by Virginia Hughes
  • Laelaps by Brian Switek
  • Not Exactly Rocket Science by Ed Yong
  • The Loom by Carl Zimmer
  • So, a hearty welcome to the new science blogging kid on the block. A long life and much enlightenment and conversation are sure to follow.

The more astute among my readers have likely noticed that Phenomena is hosted by National Geographic — the same organization that runs the very blogging community you’re reading this on, ScienceBlogs. Does this mean that NatGeo has two science blogging communities? And how are they related? The answers are, yes, NatGeo has two science blogging communities, a largeish one that they took over management of from Seed Media Group and another quite small one that they’ve built from the ground up. That would be Phenomena.

The way it’s been explained to me is that the two networks will continue as separate, unrelated brands and that NatGeo’s commitment to ScienceBlogs is the same as before.

As I mentioned at the beginning, I have posted a bunch of other YASBC items of the last few years:

I didn’t end up posting about SciLogs since it was a rebranding of Nature Network. And there are probably a few other new networks that I missed posting about too, such at Guardian Science Blogs.
