Big Story Weather from January 14: Cold air is beginning to flow in from Canada with many places about to see the coldest air in well over 20 years; high temps for many places might not get above zero by this weekend as this cold air is expected to continue to move southward. The second big story is the ice storm which is really beginning to take its toll on Northern Louisiana and Mississippi as some places have gotten a significant amount of ice which is impacting not only driving but also power lines and tree limbs.
Weather Outlook for January 15: High pressure over the Great Lakes will bring nice weather into the region and this will extend eastward into the Northeast. The cold front extending through the Southeast will bring showers to the region, while a stationary frontal boundary along the Gulf Coast will bring showers to the coast, and inland we will see more ice/snow/sleet impact the region as most of Northern Louisiana and Mississippi are under “ICE STORM WARNINGS” again today. A cold front extending down through the Northern Plains will bring some light snow to places in North Dakota and extreme Northern South Dakota. High pressure over the West Coast will bring nice weather to the region. Below is the weather for a few select cities.
Buffalo NY: Partly Cloudy/Evening Snow: 31F
Gulfport MS: Cloudy with Rain: 58F
Sioux Falls SD: Partly Cloudy: 24F
Boise ID: Partly Cloudy: 29F
Portland OR: Partly Cloudy: 42F
International Weather Outlook for January 15: An extreme area of low pressure is moving towards the Kuril Islands and will bring intense winds along with snow to the region. High pressure over Eastern China will bring partly cloudy skies to the region and this will extend into the Koreas and Japan. This could lead to more air quality problems over China again today. High pressure over Eastern Europe will bring partly cloudy skies and cooler weather to the region. An area of low pressure moving through Western Europe will bring showers to Italy. High pressure over Spain will bring partly cloudy skies to the region. Low pressure in the Fiji area will bring showers to the islands while another cold front will extend into the Southern tip of South America bringing with it cloud cover to the region. High pressure will dominate the majority of Australia today as the remains of the tropical system begin to fizzle out along the west coast. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.
Tokyo Japan: Partly Cloudy with a low near 0C
Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 14C
Singapore: Partly Cloudy with isolated thunderstorms and a low near 22C
London England: Mostly Cloudy with a low near 1C
Perth Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 20C
January 15, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:
Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving through Central Europe will bring showers and snow showers to the region. Multiple areas of low pressure are moving towards Western Europe over the next 24 hours. Low pressure off the coast of Eastern Canada will begin to push towards Iceland over the next 24 hours. Low pressure moving along the Northern Gulf of Mexico will continue to bring a wintry mix to the Gulf Coast region.
Eastern Pacific: Low pressure moving east of Hawaii will begin to push towards the southern portion of California by this weekend. Low pressure pushing into western Canada will bring showers and higher elevation snows to the region. Two strong areas of low pressure moving through the Gulf of Alaska will continue to bring heavy snows and also strong winds and seas to the region.
Western Pacific: A powerful area of low pressure continues to push away from Japan and head towards the Gulf of Alaska over the next couple of days. Low pressure moving through Central Russia will push eastward bringing snow showers with it.
Indian Ocean: The monsoonal trough is active but because of the Tibetan Plateau high it has been pushed well off shore for today. Tropical Cyclone Emang is located to the south of Diego Garcia and has winds around 35kts and a pressure of 996mb.
Southern Hemisphere: An area of low pressure moving through the Fiji area will bring showers to the islands and gusty winds. Another area of low pressure just south of the Equator towards the Northeast of Australia will continue to gain strength as it brings strong winds and seas to the open ocean right now.
Five Day Storm Index Outlook for January 15-19:
Buffalo NY: A period of light snow is possible over the next couple of days which will bring a slight impact to the region, and then again by the 18th and 19th there is a chance of seeing more light snow bringing more slight impacts to the area.
Gulfport MS: A moderate impact today between the fog, mist and this afternoon even some heavier rainfall, tomorrow there will be the chance of seeing some light rain maybe mixing in with sleet for a little bit of time bringing the area a slight impact for the 16th.

Major Weather Impacts Discussion for January 15, 2013:
Day 1-3: High pressure over the Great Lakes will bring nice weather to the region and this will advance into the Northeast. A frontal boundary will be pushing through the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic region bringing rain and possibly some wintry mix to the region. The Gulf Coast will have interaction with a stationary boundary and a developing low over the Gulf will bring some very cold rain, ice, sleet and even some snowfall to places. A frontal boundary will clip the Northern Plains with a few snow showers for the Dakotas. High pressure over the West will bring nice weather to the region. The period will finish with a frontal boundary along the Southeast and an upper level low over the Gulf Coast region which may bring some snow to the deep south. High pressure will be over the majority of the rest of the United States.
Day 4-7: The period will begin with the frontal boundary pushing off the southeast coast and high pressure building in over the majority of the country. A weak clipper system will move through the Northern Plains with a chance of light snow possible with this feature. The middle of the period there will be high pressure over the majority of the country with a low pressure in the Great Lakes region along with another colder high pressure system moving in over the Northern Plains which will bring with it temps well below zero to the region and this will spread southeastward. High pressure will still be over the West Coast. The period will end with a very cold air mass over place of the most of the country with some places seeing the coldest weather in a very long time.
Day 8-12: The period will begin with high pressure over the majority of the country bringing cold and dry weather. The middle of the period we will see a few weaker systems move through the northern part of the United States bringing snow showers to the region while the rest of the country is still under high pressure and cooler weather. The period will end with a significant storm system moving through the Great Lakes and into the Gulf Coast region.
Day 13-15: The period will start with a frontal boundary moving through the Ohio River Valley extending to another low over the Southwest Gulf of Mexico. Another cold area of high pressure will be building in over the Northern Plains. The remainder of the period will stay very active.

Ask The Weatherman for January 15, 2013:
Question: Why has it been so cold over Southern California?
Answer: To answer today’s question we have to look at the upper atmosphere to understand why it’s so cold. First, at about 30,000ft there is a long wave trough that is extending from Washington State all the way southward towards Mexico and the base or the bottom of this trough is over the Rockies. This means that the West Coast is on the backside of this trough where the cold air filters in from the Northwest and this is why Southern California is seeing this sharp cold air over them these past few days. It should end soon as the flow in the upper levels will return to a more westward flow which will bring warmer weather back into the region.

Green Energy Weather Report for January 15, 2013:

Solar Energy: The Northeast down into the Mid-Atlantic will be a good region for solar energy today. Another location will be back in the Northern Plains associated with the high pressure and another area of good solar energy will be back in the Rockies and the West Coast.
Wind Energy: A pocket of wind energy will be over the Great Lakes again today and also down into the Southern Plains behind the frontal boundary and then a few pockets through the Rockies.
Hydro-Energy: The Southeast will see rain showers which will create short term energy, while the Gulf Coast region will also see rainfall, ice and sleet which will create short term energy for the region. A frontal system going through the Northern Plains will bring some long term energy in the form of snow pack.
