One new innovative product shown off here on Press Day at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is a handy little device that can help protect loss and theft of your belongings, such as an iPhone, or dog.
Nio is a little device that connects to a device wirelessly through Bluetooth 4.0, helping you to keep track of your iPhone, or catch thieves who try to snag it from you.
By clipping the device to your side, Nio is able to alert you when you leave your phone behind, according to your proximity of the device. Nio is able to have multiple proximity settings, enabling you to either set it to go off if you walk just a short distance away from the device, or 45 feet away.
For those who carry a purse, they could place the Nio inside the bag, and their iPhone would alert the owner if the purse was picked up because of a motion sensor feature inside the device. The sensitivity of this feature can be set, so those who are on a train ride won’t find their Nio going off every few seconds.
Anyone who gets tired of hearing the alarm can just set the Nio to alert them through vibration, or you can even just use your iPhone’s music library as an alarm setting.
The device was first released in the UK last year, but this third-generation will be available in the U.S. through the iPhone. Representatives at the press conference at CES said Nio would be “coming soon” for Android devices.
Dog owners who want to ensure their dog stays within a certain proximity to them are able to attach the device to the little pooch’s collar, and their iPhone alarm will go off once the dog gets more than 45 feet away from them.
Because Nio uses Bluetooth 4.0, the battery is able to last for between two and three months, depending on the usage of the device.
Other uses for this little device include helping you keep up with carry-on luggage at the airport, or your laptop bag at Starbucks.
The Nio application is available for the iPhone for free, but another premium application for the Nio is available for purchase. This app utilizes Geo tagging in order to keep up with where your device was last seen. If you lose your phone at a bar the night before, then when you wake up in the morning you will have an email or Facebook message with a Google Maps link to help guide you to where your device has run off too.
While the “Find My iPhone” application is a sure competitor of this device, Nio is able to do more than just search for the device, but is also able to be used in other, non-electronic items for the forgetful types who often lose things.
