Samsung took the stage at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show, and swept it away with big announcements at this year’s event.
The South Korean company announced it would be launching a new line of Smart TVs that will support a Remote User Interface technology that could behave as a client to the DIRECTV Server.
This new technology will replicate the user Interface and features of a DIRECTV Server without the need for any additional set-top boxes.
Samsung said it was working to complete development of the DIRECTV HR44-200 “Genie” server, which will be launching in 2013.
The technology is based on a protocol known as RVU and is designed to work in harmony with RVU client functionality in Samsung’s 2013 line of Smart Televisions.
Consumers will be able to watch live broadcast and stored content from a DIRECTV server on Samsung Smart TVs.
“We applaud Samsung for their efforts in developing their RVU TV and set-top box solutions,” Romulo Pontual, executive vice president and CTO for DIRECTV, said in a statement. “Their support of the RVU initiative has been instrumental in the success of this innovative technology. Our mutual customers will be delighted to get the full DIRECTV experience on their Samsung TVs without the need for a separate set-top box in that room.”
Samsung said it would be exploring expanding support for DIRECTV’s whole home HD DVR and client TV as well.
“Many homes today have more than one TV to cater to the different needs of everyone in the family. By working with a leading provider like DIRECTV, we’re able to offer consumers unmatched enhanced convenience in access so they can enjoy the content they desire from any room in the home, any time they choose,” said Stephen Goldstein, Vice President Cable / Satellite Operations, Samsung Electronics America.
Samsung announced more LED televisions at the event as well, including the LED F8000. This television model will be available in sizes all the way up to 75-inches. Like many other high-end Samsung TVs, this series is super-thin.
The LED F8000 also features “Intelligent Viewing,” giving the consumer better picture quality than before. Samsung said it is including “pictures quality, design and an incredible user experience.”
This television series is the first of the Samsung TVs with a quad-core processor, hitting speeds more than 3x faster than the 2012 models. This TV understands what the consumer likes and can suggest new content.
The new Samsung SmartHub consists of five panels that organize the entertainment in the content world available to the software. Samsung says it is the “most personal user experience ever created,” with its “intelligent navigation.”
“As the plethora of apps and content grow, consumers are faced with the overwhelming challenge of discovering quality content that appeals to their interests. They are looking for ways to experience converged content, and they want to do it easily,” explained Kim Hyun-Suk, Executive Vice President and Head of Visual Display business at Samsung Electronics. “We have simplified the process with TVs that offer more intuitive features, endless connectivity and content options, and larger screen sizes with true-to-life picture quality. Consumers can now enjoy the ultimate lean back experience, which is richer and easier than ever before.”
Another incredible television feature demonstrated at the event was a multi-viewing feature. This gives viewers the ability to watch two high-definition shows at one time while wearing special glasses.
Users are able to place the glasses on and, while someone watches an NFL football game in HD, the other can watch a TLC reality show.
Samsung also said it has teamed up with Caesars Entertainment to install more than 4,500 interactive Samsung TecTile NFC tags throughout eight of its world-renowned hotels and casinos in Las Vegas.
“At Caesars, we understand that mobile, social, and online technologies are critical enablers of the customer experience,” said Tariq Shaukat, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Caesars Entertainment Corporation. “This installation of Samsung TecTiles will allow millions of our guests with any NFC-enabled device to explore all that Caesars Entertainment resorts and casinos have to offer by simply tapping their smartphone against the tags.”
The TecTile NFC tags will be located on slot machine at Caesers Palace, Harrah’s, Las Vegas, Paris, Las Vegas and Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
