(Before It's News)

A recent report from Cyber Media Research has revealed some interesting market leaders in the tablet segment. While earlier leader Micromax has slipped to second position, Samsung has now taken the lead. However, ultra-low cost education-centric tablet maker Datawind has apparently jumped to No. 3. Samsung led with a 23.9% market share, followed by Micromax at second position with 15.3% market share. Datawind was at third position with a 12.3% share in terms of sales, revealed the report.

Datawind has risen to fame & become a house-hold name thanks to the Aakash Tablet project mooted by the Government of India. Therein schools & colleges are supposed to get bulk shipments of the tablet to be distributed to students. Despite earlier severe flaws, the Aakash tablet’s debut made headlines in terms of sale. But what surprises us the most is the fact that this tablet does not form a part of the tally of total tablets sold. Apart from Aakash, Datawind currently sells 4 other variants of 7” tablets, two of which are made up of Resistive Screens (UbiSlate 7Ri and UbiSlate 7R+) & others of better quality & responsive Capacitive ones (UbiSlate 7Ci and UbiSlate 7C+).  Besides the difference in the type of screens, there is no variation in any other specifications.

While India is a large market for cheap goods, recent reports have put forth a very contradictory behavior in terms of tablets. Indians do not mind shelling out extra for purchasing tablets with premium features. This could explain why Samsung rose to the pole position. But, we surely feel something is amiss when Datawind now sits at 3rd Position. At the price points at which Datawind sells its tablets there are multiple other manufacturers offering equal or even better specifications. Perhaps the very narrowed down time-frame of the research (July-September 2012) is to be blamed for the apparent skewed results? What do you think?
