(Before It's News)

US users of Facebook now have the opportunity of trying out a new service from the number social network Facebook.

Facebook Takes Free call Service to US

The network has started trying out a new service that users can use to make free calls to friends. The free voice call feature can be found in the Messenger app. An “i” icon can be seen on the top right corner of the app (while facing your screen). Tap the icon as you are viewing a conversation and an option “free call” bottom will appear. You will be able to place a call through the button.

This service was first introduced to Canadian Facebook users barely a month ago. It seems like that was used as a testing ground and the fact that they have now expanded it to cover the US probably means that the test went creditably well.

The seeming downside to this is that you can only use this when you are connected online and to Facebook using Wi-Fi. This may still be part of their strategy to allow a controlled number of people to use it first so that they can carefully manage its introduction to the larger population of the over a billion Facebook users.

The next stage if everything goes well with this one might be to open it to Android users.
