Bigger is better. Right? The race to the biggest display is the new megapixel race. Today at Huawei’s press conference they pushed the very limits of what the word “smartphone” means by unveiling the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate. The 6.1-inch IPS+ display on the Ascend Mate features 720p resolution and is powered by a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. Besides one upping Samsung’s Galaxy Note II’s screen size, the Ascend Mate also features a bigger battery – 4,050 mAh vs. 3,100 mAh. According to Huawei, the bigger power source is enough for 22 hours of talk time, 14 hours of web browsing, or 10 hours of video. The Ascend Mate also has a unique trick up its sleeve in the form of dual WiFi receivers allowing up to 150 Mbps transfer speeds. Notable mentions include an 8-megapixel camera and “Magic Touch” technology that allows the user to wear gloves and still interact with the display. The OS of choice is Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Look for the Mate to hit the Chinese market in February and other (undisclosed) countries in March.
Taking things down a notch is Huawei’s Ascend D2. While the physical dimensions are actually smaller than the Ascend Mate’s at 5-inches, the resolution is much better – full HD 1080p. Why they didn’t put the higher resolution display on the bigger device doesn’t necessarily make much sense to us. But it is what it is. Other perks of the D2 include a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 13-megapixel camera w/ AF (1-megapixel front-facing), water/dust resistant design and 3,000 mAh. Global release for the D2 is listed as February.
