2012 saw many luminaries retiring from their respective primary fields. The most covered retirement came from the world of cricket when the master blaster finally decided to retire from the ODIs. Fans were disheartened but they acknowledged the legend and soon Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement photos and pictures, videos, blogs and articles became the trend of the internet for almost a week. Mumbai Indians, Sachin’s IPL team, has decided to honor the player’s service and loyalty to the team by retiring his jersey number 10 from further use by players in the team. The response of the fans was encouraging to say the least and the cricket community seems to resonate with the pervasive feeling of gratitude for the legend.
Mumbai Indians launched a social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter asking fans to express their gratitude towards Sachin Tendulkar for being an inspiration for the young cricketing generation and for his services to Indian sporting community. Retiring jersey number has been a common practice in football and basketball. Jersey number 10 is worn by many legends who devoted their lives to a particular club or team and the team then honored their contributions by retiring their jerserys, or awarding them to a worthy player as he proves his worth. Diego Maradona and Pele, both wore jersey number 10. Michael Jordan wore jersey number 23, his jersey is retired from Chicago Bulls.
This campaign, digitally would be first such attempt in India to gather support and admiration from the masses in honor of a legend.
