Rocstor unveiled its Amphibious X5 hard drive at the 2013 International CES on Tuesday, bringing a whole new level of security to a hard drive.

The Amphibious X5 is a rugged portable hard drive with real time hardware encryption, offering USB and FireWire 800 connections.

Rocstor’s new device is being touted as one of the most secure and user friendly hard drives in the world, when considering the size, strength of encryption, and the method of authentication.

“Amphibious is Rocstor’s latest replacement device on steroids. Designed to be used in consumer, enterprise, institutional, military and US governmental applications, it is the most secure and innovative data-at-rest device on the market today, and comes in a compact size and attractive design,” Asher Ghadoushi, Director for Rocstor, said in a statement.

The hard drive is a 2.5-inch ultra-slim drive, featuring AES-256 bit real-time hardware data encryption security performance. This drive comes in 64GB, 128 GB and 512 gigabyte Solid State versions, as well as 500GB, 750GB and 1 TB Hard Disk Drive versions.

Rocstor says that its Amphibious series Pocket Drive is designed to be used for military and government purposes.

Amphibious supports an aircraft-grade aluminum chamber, and shock-absorbent casting to protect the hard drive against impact damage, accidental drops and bumps. It’s obvious that features like this will help ensure that you don’t lose years of data, such as old wedding pictures, due to slippery hands.

The Rocstor drive comes with a built-in smart card slot, and a built in keypad for authentication, via a PIN number. Users have to enter the PIN number into the device before being able to perform a data transfer. Once the internal drive is taken out of the Amphibious enclosure, the information cannot be accessed by any other device or computer.

Up to three users, and/or passwords, can be designated for authentication. Amphibious can also provide an “administration” password for managing users.

Amphibious does not require any additional software drivers or applications to be installed, and is fully independent of the operating system.

The hard drive is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux users.
