Slingbox has always been great at what it does — placeshifting your home TV channels — but it’s a shame to have a box attached to your TV, taking up space, that only does one thing. With the October arrival of the Slingbox 350 and 500, the outfit added SlingProjector to the latter model, which at least lets you view photos on your home TV from an iOS or Android device. Now Sling has added My Media for the Slingbox 500, which turns any USB key into a “personal cloud” when attached to the device, allowing you to upload photos or video from iOS or Android tablets or smartphones. Unfortunately, everything will have to be on the same LAN for it to work, but at least My Media will be a free upgrade that Sling says will arrive on your box “in the coming weeks.” The Slingbox Companion will also be a free “second screen” app for the iPad 2 and up, with content discovery features to find programming and a remote control app to select it directly from the tab. It’ll also let you view videos and images from the aforementioned My Media app, display supplementary program info during viewing and let you share your viewing tastes on Twitter and Facebook. That software will arrive in the spring, according to Sling — you can placeshift after the break to check the PR.Continue reading Sling adds My Media and Slingbox Companion for photo syncing, iPad program infoFiled under: Home EntertainmentComments
