This week, the announcement of the Ubuntu mobile OS caused quite a stir in the community. Last year we heard rumors that we might start seeing some phones running Ubuntu, and what better time than the second day of the year to unveil that mobile OS. We are not supposed to see Ubuntu running on any phones until next year, but it seems that The Verge got their hands on a prototype phone running the new Linux based OS.

The 20-minute keynote video that came out on Wednesday, showed off the many Ubuntu like features that we have seen in the desktop OS, on the mobile platform. It all ran silky smooth, but we did not see it running on an actual device. The video below shows the new OS on a mobile device and let’s face….it has its lagging issues. I know it just a prototype, but Ubuntu has plenty of work to do this year getting their OS to run as buttery smooth as Jelly Bean or even iOS. We have also been told that Galaxy Nexus users will soon be able to flash Ubuntu onto their phones, so I am sure their are many users out there that will be anxious to give the new OS a spin.

Check out the video below and let us know what you think.
