(Before It's News)

Wikimedia, the non-profit foundation which runs Wikipedia has announced the launch of another crowdsourced wiki-based website called WikiVoyage. This new website deals only with travel and will help provide travel  information to various travelers all over the world. Wikipedia and its crowdsourced content has provided knowledge and value to many people (Students) all over the world. Wikimedia hopes that the same will happen with WikiVoyage.

The website has existed in beta earlier and now after the official launch boasts around 50,000 travel articles which are being edited by a core team of 200 people. The website is currently available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

Stefan Fussan, Chairman of the board of the Wikivoyage Association spoke about the launch.

“The purpose of the Wikivoyage Association is to promote education and knowledge of all countries and regions in the world, as well as understanding among nations,We’re very excited about the launch of Wikivoyage as a Wikimedia project, and about the future role of the Association in supporting the Wikivoyage community through its programs.”

There happens to be a great need for crowdsourced travel content as it brings about unique facets and experiences to the forefront, thus giving aspiring travelers some very valuable tips about a place/country. Besides this, there is also the danger of innacurate content, a problem which Wikipedia has also had to battle with. Since both these sites allow anyone to edit a particular article, there could be inaccuracies both intentional and unintentional on the website. Editors could take quite a bit of time to spot out the errors. For example, Wikipedia had an entire article on a war that was completely fictional  which managed to fool everyone for 5 years till it was discovered recently. You can read all about it here.

Whatever the cons may be of publicly editable wiki content, the organization’s intentions are noble. Creating a free resource for information is difficult, especially without monetization. Let’s hope we get to see some quality articles on WikiVoyage.
